When many of us think about classrooms and lessons, we think about the kind of surroundings we were used to as pupils. Technology may still have been a long way into the future. Todays pupils have a much livelier and more exciting set of surroundings opening up to them. It is recognised that simply standing and talking to a class is not the best way of communicating with them. Why is this? To begin with, people have different ways of learning. Hearing a lesson is not necessarily the best way to learn what is being taught. There is another key sense involved too, and that is vision. In the past teachers were restricted to using chalkboards and chalk. Now they can use far more interactive means to help reach their pupils and engage them in each and every lesson. When colour, sound and information are combined in an intriguing and engaging way, it is possible to provide a lesson that every pupil will remember. This is how innovative developments are taking place in the classrooms of today. New tools and methods for conveying information are being used to make sure lessons are more enjoyable. One good element about the way technology is being put to use with interactive whiteboards and similar tools is that they can be used for all age groups. The teacher can plan their lessons in advance and be confident they have everything they need to ensure their message reaches all the children. Technology has also enabled the teachers to make sure everyone is up to speed with their learning. Handheld devices allow the pupils to select the answer they believe is correct from the ones given. They dont have to worry about any mistakes being made public, and yet the teacher will know whether or not a particular pupil needs more guidance. In this sense both the teachers and the pupils are benefiting from ever more innovative introductions to the classroom. Of course, planning for a lesson is not new. Teachers have been doing this for many years. But todays modern lesson plans have made it easier than ever to be confident the pupils will be engaged by what they have in mind. The internet has enabled teachers and organisations to share their plans instead of having to start all of them from scratch. There is no doubt that modern interactive and innovative tools are the way to ensure successful teaching that reaches more pupils than ever before. There is every indication that pupils appreciate these new methods and respond to them more readily than other less interactive forms of teaching.
