Installing Air Conditioners Isn't for Everyone

This summer has been blistering hot, humid and full of storms

. It's common to hear about global climate change on the TV and read it in the news. While the climate change debate is still one thing is clear: summers are getting hotter and more humid. If you suffer through summer's hottest months without AC units in the home or work place, I'm sure the thought of getting one installed has crossed your mind.

If you haven't shopped around lately for air conditioners, you may not know about pricing. Extremely cheap (and most likely inefficient) window AC units will run about $150. The electricity consumed can put the costs of using those air conditioners over the original cost of the unit monthly though. Good AC units that are energy star rated and super-efficient while at the same time quiet will cost upwards of $200.

It's not uncommon for homeowners to install their own window AC units with good results. To install a window air conditioner, remove it from the box. Be sure you have the proper electrical outlet before you go to the work of installing the unit. Many people also forget to measure cord length and end up with an extension cord running through their home in order to power their window AC units.

Gather all the tools required. This usually just includes a drill or screwdriver. All the hardware you will need will come in the box. Grab a helper to assist you in holding and balancing the unit while you install the brackets with included extensions. Screw your new air conditioner into the brackets, lower the window until it settles on to the top of the unit and pull the extensions in towards the unit until they meet up with the edge of the unit. Screw in the extensions to the unit, plug it in and you are ready to go! Turn it on and enjoy the cool air.

Split AC units are great for apartments and small homes. The unit is built and installed just like the name implies; half inside, half outside. Installation by certified HVAC contractors is strongly recommended for split AC units. The inside section, which contains a fan and filter must be hung properly in a wall, usually near the ceiling. Flaps that oscillate cool the room, while the outside half of the unit does the dirty work. Split air conditioners are a wonderful way to improve the quality of air in the home and add comfort with low energy prices.

Full central air units are considerably more expensive. An outside unit must be installed by Hvac contractors, along with extensive duct work throughout the home. Vents must be placed in floors or walls. The average homeowner should never attempt to do this on their own. The costs of installing central air can be high, but they unit usually pays for itself in energy savings and comfort within a few years. Repairs on central air conditioners should be covered by a warranty for several years. Never attempt to do your own repairs, as it can void the warranty.
