Having dedicated smoking shelters provides a place where smokers can congregate, helping to confine the detritus associated with the habit to a limited area, and making it easier therefore to keep the rest of the premises tidy. If there was no dedicated area, employees would wander around smoking, giving off a negative impression to some customers and potentially dropping cigarette butts all over the area. By providing a dedicated area for employees to smoke in, it is far more likely that the employees will stay in one place and will put all of their butts into a specially provided waste bin or collection point.

Some firms will begrudge spending too much on a smoking shelter as it provides employees with a reason to be away from their desk, but other firms will embrace the smoking shelter and hope that their employees appreciate the gesture. After all, a firm is under no obligation to provide a sheltered smoking area for its employees so one that provides a quality shelter should be looked upon favourably by its workers.

Depending on the look of the building and the image of the company, a firm may decide that its smoking shelters have to look good. The days of smoking shelters only looking like bus stops are long gone and there are many ways for smokers to be accommodated in safety and style when they decide to take a break to enjoy a cigarette. Again, the finish and style of a smoking shelter is a personal decision for every firm but for companies which appreciate good design and quality, there will be one or two modern shelters that really appeal to them.
