For this reason, lenders do not feel they need to protect themselves as much through high interest rates if you do not pay back the loan because they know they can always take those assets agreed upon beforehand.

With unsecured loans, however, lenders only have your legal word that you will pay back the loan and therefore, they try to protect themselves with higher interest rates, especially if you have bad credit since bad credit shows that you have not been as responsible as you could have been. Plus, with unsecured credit, if you do not pay back the loan, interest could still continue to accumulate on the unpaid balances.
