Instruction To Look For Faulty Dc Electric Motors

Like any other machineries and equipments, DC electric motors are also prone to faults and defects

. Since the uses of these motors are so common in daily life, acquiring the ability to identify them becomes mandatory for users. However, troubleshooting the electrical intricacy can be challenging if you are less informed about the nuts and bolts of DC electric motors. Here are some basic procedures you are follow to check the machine.

Disconnect all the electric powers from the motor that operates it and then remove it from its current position. To do this job you may have to read the manufactures instruction book or manual.

Get a volt ohmmeter to test the motors continuity. Set the meters position to ohm then insert red and black leads in the motor socket. Make sure that the red lead is connected to ohm and back to the common connection point. Now, touch the two leads together to test the meter. If the meter is fine, it should read full continuity or zero ohms.

Connect meter leads and motor leads together. Ideally, meter should read 10-30 ohms. If it reads infinite ohms/open circuit, turn around the motors end shaft, thereafter it should show various ohms readings that means motor is fine, problem is in electrical circuit. In case, meter still shows open circuit, the fault can be in conducting brushes.


If you find problem in conducting brushes, remove it from the machine using a screw driver. You will find them at the either ends of the machine, located under two plastic end caps and attached with a spring having copper wire.

Check the carbon brushes for cracks and breakage. The side the carbon brush that rides against the copper conduct should be curved and have smooth finish. If there is any breakage in the wire the machine will not operate. If both the brushes are fine, the problem can be in the copper commutator.

To check copper commutator, remove the caps at the rear end of DC electric motors, using a screwdriver. The caps can be pulled out by removing the long screws that run the length of the machine.

Check the plates that comprise commutator for any broken wire and motor coil winding. Also check if there is any traces of burnt vanish on the motor coil. If the damage is spotted it cannot be repaired but can be fixed only by replacing it.

Using these tips you can easily spot fault and defects in the motor and keep it running for longer time.
