Interdepartmental Networking Tips For Students In Accounting Courses

Like most dedicated students in accounting courses

, youve taken careful steps to get the most out of your diploma or certificate program. You attend every class. You take careful notes, which you then review weekly. But you know that paying attention to your schoolwork is not all that it takes to succeed. Your time in college is also a time to build a professional network, with your teachers and fellow students, but also with students in other programs, such as dental assistant training and medical office assistant training: fields that may one day need to call on the services of a trusted accounting professional. Here are some tips on fostering good relations with the students in the other departments at your community college.

1. Offer a free income tax information session for students in other departments.

Is tax time fast approaching? Join forces with the other students in your accounting courses to offer a goodwill service for students in other programs.

The students in your accounting courses can sign up for one-hour shifts at a centrally situated information booth, where they can provide informal tax information to students in dental assistant training or medical office assistant training as they pass by.

This will give the students in accounting courses a chance to:

mingle with the students in other courses

practice their skills

do a good deed

grow their future professional network

2. Co-host a benefit ball.

Does your school have a favourite charity? Perhaps the students in your accounting courses can band together to organize a fun, charitable event, in cooperation with students from other programs at your school, such as dental assistant training or medical office assistant training.

Organizing an interdepartmental event will foster goodwill between students in different disciplines, and help create lasting professional ties.

3. Organize a friendly sporting event.

Have the students in your accounting courses challenge their counterparts in dental assistant training or medical office assistant training to a friendly race in the school or community pool. Or, organize an end-of-the-year soccer match and BBQ. It will foster school spirit and create an atmosphere in which professional ties are sure to blossom.

4. Publish a school newspaper at the end of the year.

Invite the fellow students in your accounting courses to produce an end-of-the-year school newsletter with students from other departments. This is a chance for students for different programs to learn more about one anothers goals and accomplishments.

Be creative, look for ways to develop relationships with the students in other programs as you pursue your accounting courses.
