Interesting Information About The History Of Pilates And Joseph Pilates By Encinitas Pilates Teacher

The history of Pilates is quite an intriguing tale

. Joseph Pilates was born in 1880, near Dusseldorf, Germany. As a child he suffered from rickets, rheumatic fever and asthma, yet when he was still quite young, he decided that he would somehow find a way to restore his health. Pilates studied the discipline of marital arts and yoga and combined that with gymnastics, bodybuilding, boxing and other sports. By 14 years old, his body was so perfectly sculpted that he was posing for use in anatomical charts.

When he was a young man, the history of Pilates moved from Germany to England and he worked as a circus performer, boxer and a self defense instructor. After World War I, when other German nationals were incarcerated, he influenced the people around him to follow and participate in his exercise program that was called Contrology. Pilates and his compatriots managed to survive the devastating influenza epidemic that killed thousands of people in 1918. They attributed their physically fit lungs to their sole reason of their survival.

Later, Pilates was sent over to the Isle of Man. Here, he worked as an orderly to care for the people that had been wounded from the war. Many of the soldiers were tragically week from laying in hospital beds over such long periods of time. Their muscles had atrophied which really decreased their chance for recovery. Pilates used his genius apparatus and rehabilitated these wounded people right in their hospital beds. Regardless of the injury, Pilates strengthened their muscles.

Pilates returned to Germany after the war, but displeased with the country's political direction, he decided to move to the United States and met Clara on the ship, who would later become his wife. With Clara being a nurse, they had a lot in common so upon arriving in New York, they opened a physical fitness studio together.

This is where the history of Pilates really exploded. The Pilates method became a powerful tool used for dancers, actresses, actors and circus performers to condition their bodies and rehabilitate injuries sustained. Dance companies across the world began using the Pilates form regularly.

Romana Kryzanowsk was a student of Pilates as a young dancer in New York and she absorbed every bit of Joseph Pilates' work. She continued his legacy and shared all she had learned across the world. As Pilates' students became teachers and began to share the fundamentals that they had learned, Pilates classes became more available across the world.

Joseph and Clara Pilates ran their studio for a little over 40 years. Now, many years later, the world is really beginning to realize how the history of Pilates, designed a genius workout.
