There are different ways for you to get a degree for interior design. You can go to a university, college or even a professional design school. They all have programs that you can get your degree in. If you are just wanting an associate's degree you can get this with in two years. If you are looking for a bachelor's degree then you can obtain the degree in four years.
If you are not sure which degree is for you then here are a few facts. If you only want to be an assistant to an interior designer then an associate's degree will do the trick. If you want a formal design apprenticeship then you will need the bachelor's degree.
When deciding where you want to go you need to look at what art and design programs are being offered. Usually before you are accepted the school is going to ask for samples. This could include any sketches that you have done over the years. This is going to be the time for you to shine and show off your artistic abilities.
Upon completing your interior designer education it is best to work under another interior designer. This will give you experience and guidance as you progress and fine tune your skills. In approximately one to three years you will be ready to venture off by yourself.
If you are wondering about getting an actual state license be prepared for an exam. You can only take this exam after a total of six years of combined education and experience. Every state is different how they issue your new title after passing the exam. Some will call the interior designer licensed, certified or even registered.
When going into this field keep in mind employers are looking for computer savvy people. There are safety codes for buildings that you are going to have to know.
Most employers are looking for someone that has an imagination so they can picture what is being asked of them. Then you will have to be creative about how you are going to do things. Every step you do from the imagination to the final days of the project will be communicated with the employer. You will need to know how to draw these visions not only on paper but, on the computer. You will also need to know how to verbally talk about all the plans that are going to be set in motion. Lastly every little detail is going to have to be in writing so everyone has something to refer back to.
You can get an interior designer education in all rooms for a building or you can narrow it down to just one room. There are some designers that just specialize in kitchens or even bathrooms.
