The stride in the development of LED technology has increased the functionality and usage of LED based equipment. Whereas traditionally LED was being used as the main component of the electronic items like TVs, Laptops, Computers and decorative lighting, these days we find a lot of diverse type of equipment making use of it. Interior lighting is one such aspect where there is a lot of experimentation in progress with many companies trying to develop various equipment.

As a matter of fact , there has been an acceptance of street lighting being done by LED sources but as far a interior lighting is concerned its use is still limited. This is despite the many advantages that LED lights offer, the foremost amongst them being the low cost as well as fractional consumption of power. So why is it that its usage has not been seen much in interior lighting? That is because it has some serious drawbacks as of now and can be used in more numbers only after these are overcome.

Three main problems that are seen are:

Heat Dissipation As compared to street lighting, which is out in the open, the interior lighting finds usage in the closed environment of our homes. The heat generated during the lighting, though not much, is difficult to diffuse and gives rise to higher internal temperature. Using fans or air conditioners to offset this would be counter productive since it would defeat the very purpose of using the LED. Hence most companies are working on ways to reduce heat emissions in case of interior lighting equipment of the future.

Cost LED equipment for interior lighting is still in its early stages and an offshoot of the basic technology that has been actually developed for TV and electronics industry. Therefore the cost is still higher than what it could be. To switch over to home use and interior lighting it would need a major reshuffle in the manufacturing plants and only after that is done, could there be a much lower cost and more usage.

Technology The technology in the field of interior lighting equipment for mass usage is still in its nascent stages and would take time to evolve.
