It used to be done in person or as a postal package. I have to mention that these promotional stuff had to be made of something (CDs,Tapes... etc.) not to mention the cost of sending them through the post. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to do this once as there were some more people on the list they wanted to transfer these promotional stuff.
By the way I used to do the same thing, however I sent the information packages through email. No matter how it was done as regards to this subject, the following step would be the follow-up. In the old way of Network Marketing regularly unqualified prospects (not entrepreneurs) were approached with home based business propositions, therefore it was even more important to build relationships and trust with your prospects. In case you were chasing every person you knew you still had to be a person they like and trust.
In modern days people are very busy so a business opportunity has to be shared with them several times to have them make their ultimate decision. That's why follow-up is used in MLM to make the leads think of your opportunity and to have them take action.
Imagine the old-school process for a moment: hero Networker try to aproach everyone he knows (all the people on his list), he sends packages to them, it takes time for the packages to get there, and then starts making phone calls quite a lot of times just to get a rejection.
