Intimacy With God Through Meditation

I'll never forget the day I was lying on the bed

, exhausted. My youngest daughter climbed on top of my chest and just started playing with my face. Then she looked at me and said, "Daddy, I love you soooo much." Wow! I hugged that child hard, thinking, "What can I give her? What do you want honey? I'll give you anything!"

I like what Jesus said: "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." I can imagine the same thing happens to God when we abide in Him, when His Word gets in us. It's like we get in His face, grab Him by His big cheeks and show Him how much we love Him. And God says, "Angels, go down there! You've got to give him or her something! That's My baby! Go down there!"

So how do we show God that we love Him? Joshua 1:8 gives us the answer: "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." We must meditate on the Word.

What does it mean for a Christian to meditate on something? Does it involve deep breathing and strange physical positions? Some people think so. Others assume meditation only involves reading their Bibles. However, in the original Hebrew, you'll find that the word meditate means, "to moan, utter, muse, mutter, meditate, devise, plot and speak." I believe that the three key ingredients to true, biblical meditation are muttering, speaking aloud and musing.

To mutter means "to speak quietly to yourself, revolving the same thing around again and again." This basically means that you rehearse words for your inner ear to hear (Romans 10:17). You can do this in the shower, in your car, or at work, because you are speaking quietly to yourself. There is no danger of disturbing anyone. When you speak something aloud, you simply open your mouth and continually release words of faith (i.e., scripture) in an audible voice. In doing so, negative and sinful thoughts are brought into captivity.

Your daily confession of God's Word and your testimony of His goodness (Revelation 12:11) tears down the "bad" thoughts and replaces them with "good ones." Never pass up an opportunity to say to someone, "Let me tell you what the Lord has done!" Speaking out God's Word in the face of contradictory evidence causes demons to flee (James 4:7).

To muse means "to ponder, to consider and to study closely." In other words, you consider a passage of scripture and how you can apply it to your life. You think about how different situations can be affected by its truth. You may even dig further into its meaning and application by doing a word study or reading other passages that deal with the same topic. It's like a cow chewing his cud. He chews and chews, trying to squeeze out all the nutrition he can.

As you become rooted and grounded in the Word and develop a greater intimacy with God through meditation, you will become so consumed with Him that you will prosper and have good success. Get in God's face and meditate!
