Introducing New Blackberry 8520

Here we introduce our new Blackberry Copy: Blackberry 8520 and Blackberry 9500

. The screen of the BlackBerry 8520 is nice and clear, with a QVGA resolution of 320 by 240 pixels. While obviously not as sharp, images and text aren't as smooth and show some pixilation, the screen is still clear and bright. Users can adjust the screen's brightness and backlight time as well as the theme, font size, and more through the Settings menu.

Blackberry 8520 weighs 106g and is noticeably slimmer and smaller than previous Curve models. It's shorter and lighter and about 2mm less broad than the iPhone 3G. Were pleased to see a move away from the giant smartphone trend and a focus on basic phone and text entry functions. It measures 4.29 x 2.36 x 0.55 inches, which makes it slightly thicker than the Blackberry 9500 but weights about the same (3.74 oz.). The Blackberry 8520 is the first BlackBerry Copy we've seen to use an optical track pad button instead of a trackball. The Curves screen-over-QWERTY-keyboard form factor has become pretty standard for slab smartphones. Unlike previous BlackBerrys, the Blackberry 9500 edges are ringed with rubber to ensure a better grip. Keys on the left side of the keyboard slope slightly up to the right, and keys on the right slope slightly up to the left, to make it easier to avoid tapping adjacent keys. On the frost-blue unit we reviewed, the alphanumeric icons were difficult to make out in direct light. And, as usual, the small number keys, all the keys are kind of tiny, actually make it hard to direct dial. The buttons are slightly smaller and packed close together, so users with larger fingers might have some problem. However, we were able to find our groove after a while and could easily type messages. The number keys share space with letters on the left side, though they're not as easy to spot at a glance since the charcoal gray buttons don't stand out against the black keyboard whereas the 8900 highlighted them in white.

The media player function of Blackberry 9500 is good and simple to use, but not overly loaded with features. It supports folders, and will sort your music by Artist, Album and Genres. It also supports album art and playlists, which the user can create on the go and the other options, are Repeat and Shuffle. Audio formats supported are MP3, AMR-NB, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+, WMA and WAV, while the video formats are MPEG4, H.263 and WMV. As you would expect videos look wonderful on the high resolution screen. The included stereo headphones are pretty poor, but the 3.5mm jack means you can use any headphones you want. With our higher quality headphones music sounded very good. It runs on a 512MHz processor with 128MB RAM and 256MB ROM, which leads to exceptionally smooth performance. There is not much in terms of software beyond what we have come to expect from Blackberry devices. The most notable of which is the DataViz Documents to Go package, and of course Brick Breaker. Since there is no GPS, there is no Blackberry Maps. Keep in mind that by the retail launch this may change, and we expect carrier customizations.
