Introduction to the Terran

The Terran are the "new kids on the block", so to speak

. When compared to the other races they are the relative newcomers to the Koprulu sector. They are also a much younger race than both the Zerg and the Protoss.

Despite their name, they have no connection to Earth except for the fact that their ancestors once came from Earth and that they themselves are humans.

The Terrans don't benefit either from the advanced technologies of the Protoss or from the evolutionary capabilities of the Zerg. Despite this however, they survive and manage to thrive on the mostly lifeless worlds of the Koprulu sector.

Terran Adaptability

The Terrans boast innate traits of adaptability. In game terms this translates into the ability to build bases pretty much anywhere on the map. And when it comes to fighting, they use the technology they have at their disposal and combine this with large numbers of units. While their technology is nowhere near as advanced as the Protoss', and their numbers are nowhere near as many as the Zerg, the Terran strike a balance between the two.

The SC2 Terrans have adapted both their buildings and units to the harsh, post-Brood Wars realities of war. The main focus amongst these adaptations is the central hub of any Terran base, the Command Center.

The Command Center

While in the original game you were able to build add-ons to the Command Center, in Starcraft 2 you can modify your Command Center into two very distinct buildings.

One is the Planetary Fortress. This upgrade transforms your Command Center into a defensive building, increasing its armor and allowing it to deal some damage. The disadvantage being that you can't lift this building off the ground.

The other is the Orbital Command. Transforming your Command Center with this upgrade will give you access to a few new and very useful capabilities:

1. The Scanner Sweep

2. Detect burrowed or cloaked units

3. Calldown Abilities

With one of the Calldown abilities you can increase the supply output of a Supply Depot by 8. With the other one you can get an experimental unit that mines for minerals much faster than SCVs can however this unit can only work for ninety seconds. The latter ability can prove to be a great boon to your economy.

Building Add-Ons

One other important aspect to Terran strategy is their Barracks and Factory add-ons. The interesting thing being that the add-ons are interchangeable. This means that you can build a Reactor for a Barracks and then lift off the Barracks and connect the same Reactor to a Factory. The flexibility of this game mechanic combined with that of the lift-off mechanic will allow for very interesting building strategies. It enables you to save precious resources and space by moving the building around.

The Terrans rely on a combo of heavy armor and impressive firepower in order to protect their worlds from their enemies. In fact, they are the race that excels the most at defending itself via the use of Bunkers, Siege Tanks, Missile Turrets and Sentry Towers.
