Is A Hospital Or Clinic A Better Place To Have A Liposuction?

Liposuction is an incredibly popular and constantly growing field

. Last year alone, over 300,000 Americans underwent the surgery--and that was in a recession year. Liposuction (also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) has been the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States for twelve out of the last thirteen years, and it is equally popular in other areas of the world as well. The surgery is common in Europe, South America and parts of Asia.

Although liposuction is a surgical procedure, it is far less invasive and traumatic than many other forms of cosmetic surgery. Instead of involving large incisions or the implanting of large foreign masses into the body, lipoplasties are performed with tiny needles called cannulas. The cannula is attached to a vacuum device, and as it is moved through the fatty tissue of the target area, it breaks up and suctions out fat. In virtually all cases, it can be performed under local anesthesia.

Exactly where your liposuction takes place will depend on your surgeon's facilities and preference. Some surgeons don't have space or equipment for a full-scale liposuction in their clinic, and maintain offices at a local hospital instead. Others operate out of their offices, which is a perfectly acceptable location so long as the have the equipment and cleanliness necessary.

Of course, the potential patient also has a say in where the surgery can be performed. Some people find that a small clinic feels much more personable and homey than a big institution, while others want their procedures to be done in a hospital, because they feel that this will be safer.

In reality, there are positives and negatives to both locations. While a hospital does have more options if something where to go wrong, they also tend to be busier, and the large concentration of other sick people and various diseases can be a hazard in itself. Individual clinics run the risk of being somewhat less professional, but many of them have received accreditation by the state, and even many of those which have not meet the cleanliness requirements for a liposuction surgery.

In the end, the most important question is not where your surgery will take place, but who will be doing it. Make sure you do your research and choose a surgeon who has an outstanding record of safety and good results. A good surgeon is a much better guarantee against complications than any specific location.
