Is A Precious Pug The Ideal Dog For You?

Pugs are among the most distinctive breed of dogs with their comical little punched in noses

, wrinkled faces, and big buggy eyes. They seem to have been designed by a cartoon artist who looked to create the most expressive doggie face in a comical package with personality galore. The charming little pug certainly lives up to all of this and more. It's no wonder this breed has such a devoted following and is so loved the world over.

Pugs are delightful pets for families or individuals. They are excellent companion dogs for adults and are wonderful playmates for children, though as with any pet, very young children should be supervised to ensure the safety of both child and pet. These strong little dogs have very gentle temperaments but can get over anxious with their affection and knock a little kid down if they get too rambunctious. Pugs adore being the center of attention and will often go to the most silly and comical lengths to get it. As long as it gets them attention there is little they won't put up with, including being dressed up in funny outfits and hats.

At 15 to 18 pounds as an adult, their small size makes them very suitable for smaller home and apartment life. They are indoor dogs and do not require a lot more exercise than they will get running around and playing inside making them ideal pets for those with busy lifestyles and limited time for extensive dog walking. They are not a good choice for those who are looking for energetic companions to jog with or play extended games of fetch. Due to their short noses, pugs have limited ability to control their body temperature, making them very vulnerable to heat and cold. They should never be left outside on hot, humid days.

Though they look comical, pugs are quite intelligent. They can be stubborn about what and how they want to learn, but when the right motivation is provided, they can learn quickly. They crave attention and are usually treat hogs, so using these tools wisely, you can teach your pug to do a lot of fun tricks.

Pugs are not the best guard dogs so if you are looking for protection a pug is not the dog for you. They may bark to alert if someone approaches but the only threat to a burglar would be getting licked to death. However, this easy-going temperament is an advantage to those who can't stand yappy dogs that bark incessantly. Pugs are generally very laid-back and quiet.

If you think a pug is the perfect addition to your family, do some homework to find a pug breeder whose pug puppies are healthy, socialized, and raised in a loving family environment. Avoid purchasing a pug or any other dog from a pet store where the puppies are more likely to have been born in puppy mills.
