Is Alcohol The Secret To Good Health?
Most of us would recall the disbelief, scepticism and downright ridicule that the
first reports relating dinking and good health were received with, a few decades later and after a lot more of such substantiated claims the initial reaction does not seem to be totally out of place. There has been a steady flow of positive reports linking alcohol to good health, particularly good heart health and these reports have come from sources that have good credentials and from people who claim to have done their research thoroughly. Their contention has been that liquor consumed in moderation has positive effects like thinning the blood by reducing cholesterol which in turn helps in reducing the strain on the heart. At a lesser level limited alcohol consumption especially before dinner is supposed to trigger better appetite, help in getting a good sleep and a general sense of well being.
Critics however point out that liquor deserves to be treated as a major health hazard, they argue that none of the health risks ***ociated with drinking have been proven wrong and the high alert on drinking should not be lowered. They list the following as damning reasons to keep the bottle the wide berth that it deserves.
1. It causes irreparable damage to the liver by impeding the secretion of vital enzymes which could lead to cirrhosis. The liver happens to be a highly resilient and sturdy organ which is not easily infected. It is also true that once it is effected it becomes one of the most difficult organs to be brought back to normalcy.
2. Alcohol kills brain ells, slows the cognitive abilities and functioning of the brain.
In extreme cases it excites the brain and leads to unruly and uncivil behaviour
3. It causes an irritable and unpleasant state referred as hangover which results in headache, dizziness, vomiting sensation, nausea, dehydration and excessive thirst
Critics point out that if wine has been found to be good for the heart in studies, it is the anti-oxidants present in the grape or berry that takes the credit and not the alcohol content. They believe that moderate drinking is next to impossible, alcohol is a strong addiction and drinkers will be increasing intake with the passage of time. They discount the studies conducted by pointing out that the so called moderate drinkers who were involved in the study also did all other things right. They were non - smokers, stuck to a non fatty balanced diet and exercised regularly, so moderate drinking in isolation is not the cause of their good health but the other factors. The liquor consumption could have been a non participant or may have complemented the others marginally.
The fact remains that there is no gold standard kind of study that has passed controlled clinical tests to prove beyond doubt that liquor is a health enhancer or heart tonic. So if you are already a drinker keep your consumption to the lowest levels, so you have the cake and eat it too. If you are not a drinker already do not start it afresh. Critics also point out that these studies although conducted by eminent doctors and researchers leave a trace of doubt since they are sponsored by the large alcohol companies. It is only logical to believe that they would have their vested results in doing so.
