Is Botox Becoming an Obsession or an Addiction?
Is Botox Becoming an Obsession or an Addiction
?
"One quick session canmake you look great and feel fantastic. No wonder Botox junkiesjust can't get enough."
These are the opening words to an article written by a women called KateSpicer.
I have never heard of Kate Spicer, or know what she looks like, but I came across a very funny but sad article she wrote about herself, and her addiction to Botox.
Last year Kate made a TV show about, and I quote, "The growing phenomenon of women who make themselves look pretty (and not so pretty) with the literally bloody cutting-edge treatments that can be found in high street beauty salons everywhere."
During the making of this show, Kate came face to face with Botox, and once the filming was over she was determined not to have anymore. But in the space of four months the effects began to wear off, and she wanted more she effectively became addicted.
She went on to say how amazed she was to learn how addictive Botox is and how widespread the addiction is.
There is apparently a doctor who goes by the name of Dr. Chez Vous who makes urgent house calls to those wanting a very, very quick fix.
Dr. Chez Vous makes his urgent house calls dressed in black leather, and arriving on a Yamaha FJR 1300 motor bike carrying his loot in a metal brief-case.
It would seem that the doctor has a myth like status, but Kate assures everyone that he is very real. He's the 24/7 emergency muscle freezer, and wrinkle filler doctor.
Within minutes of arriving on your doorstep he has you lying on your sofa filling you full of poison. It can be over in two hours or less from that first phone-call.
Kate feels that the word junkie describes some of her behavior. She says, "Like a junkie I get panicky when the drug runs out. Having consultations with cosmetic doctors in nice practices are all well and good, but I always want Botox now."
It is obvious that Kate's need for Botox is strong. "It's like giving cocaine to your vanity", says Kate. Ringing Dr. Chez Vous for an instant Botox fix can be compared to going to a dealer for your drug fix, or ringing the liquor store for your booze fix.
Botox for some is a chance to restore their looks, but for others cosmetic surgery and in particular Botox can turn into an obsession. A recent study shows that four out of ten people who use Botox feel compelled to do so, repeatedly.
Adam Searle, who is the president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, (BAAPS) will tell a conference of surgeons this week that more patients are becoming addicted to surgery.
Dr. Eileen Bradbury, a consultant psychologist at the Alexander Hospital in Cheadle in the UK treats patients hooked on cosmetic procedures. She says, "People can become addicted to the anticipation, the excitement and the attention they receive. But she warns that the result of feeling fabulous is short-lived.
"Botox is expensive, especially if you are going to a top salon who can give you a has she or hasn't she' job, and not just a freeze your face so you look like a startled blow-up doll job", so says Kate.
A bit of Botox given by Dr. C V starts at 180, plus 10 for petrol and parking. "Like a junkie, there are a few problems getting the money together to pay" says Kate.
"I once saw a women wearing a T-shirt that read, "Will f*** for coke" I gave her a pitying look, my T-shirt would declare "Will f*** for 100 units of Botulinum Toxin" admits Kate.
The economic downturn hasn't given the pharmaceutical companies that make Botox, Restylane and Juvederm a problem, because American advertising expenditure on these favourites has increased by 20%, and on both sides of the Atlantic usage is on the rise.
Kate says, "It costs a doctor in the UK 2.50p to buy one unit of Botox, and if you need it for medical reasons e.g. severe migraines, cerebral palsy or excessive sweating you can get it on the National Health Service, but for wrinkles the charge will be at least 10 or more per unit. And a unit doesn't go very far".
I have met with many people who have Botox regularly, and well over half of them strongly deny they are addicted to it, but they did admit too, "never being able to stop, no matter what the cost," because they couldn't go back to how they looked before Botox. They also agreed to be more critical of how they look now, and study themselves in the mirror more. At first they said that money to pay for their treatments was not a big concern, but they all worried about growing more wrinkles, and its' not if, but when that happens, would their finances stretch enough to cover the extra treatments?Almost all agreed that they experienced a very strong feeling of relief and elation, straight after a treatment.
One lady likened it for herself to, "Being on a bit of a high." because she could now relax for a while before the tension of watching her face returning to normal, and the build up to how long she could wait before her next treatment.
But they are definitely not addicts. As one women said quite crossly; addicts drink too much or take drugs, I am definitely not one of those!!
I will leave Kate to sum up the Love, Hate relation she has with Botox.
"Most of my good friends" says Kate "don't like Botox, so I have found a few new ones who do. I call them my drug buddies. We swap doctors' numbers, and discuss various ways to reduce the price of a fix. For this group of women using syringes as part of their beauty regime is normal".
"Botox gives your vanity a boost, and one expensive Botox hit can make you feel on top of the world, and it will feed your insecurities as it wears off, waiting for that moment a few months down the track when your body has metabolized the paralytic agent, and your face literally drops back to normal, midnight hour for the Botox Cinderella".
"When, several times a day I peer in the mirror, watching my face slowly drop back to its usual Deputy Dawg expression, I think I should give up this stuff, it isn't making me happy. But when there are these jabs in the chin muscles that you can have to turn up the corner of a miserable mouth..
I can look happy again for a few months. Then the whole process starts once more."
