Some people say that a creative CD packaging is not necessary nowadays since everyone is going digital and CDs are so outdated
. They say why bother making beautiful CD packaging if no one buys the CD anymore. Not only will it waste the artists time and money, it would also be a cause of frustration.
I beg to disagree. Yes, CDs are not as popular today as it was in the 90s BUT isnt that the exact reason why musicians should all the more make catchy CD packaging? If CD sales are in fact that low, then my advice is make fewer CDs but make sure they are extra special so people would consider buying them. Do not make the same kind of CDs they used to make when the medium was at its peak. Times are changing now and you have to innovate or disappear completely.
To add appeal to your album, make sure you experiment with the CD packaging. Dont be too scared with the costs because you can increase the price of your album by a few dollars if its really worth it. Personally, Id rather spend a few dollars on an album with a cool CD packaging than save a few cents on an album that has nothing remarkable except the songs. If Ill just buy an album because of the songs-heck, Id rather download them at home. Remember, you are now catering to the loyal fans since they are the ones most likely to buy your album. The loyal fans want collectibles and special edition albums and the easiest way to make an album special is thru the CD packaging.
Before going crazy with conceptualizing your CD packaging, ask your distributor first if they have special rules for custom CD packaging. You also have to shop around for a good CD manufacturing company and a reliable printer so you would somehow know the limitations of your CD packaging design. Once youre done checking your limitations, its time to sit down with a graphic designer and start conceptualizing your CD packaging. Here are some other things to consider when coming up with a design for your CD packaging:
Shipping and handling- If you want a very big box for your CD packaging, you have to consider the shipping cost. The bigger and heavier the box, the higher the cost. You might want to consult your courier of their rates so you would still have time to make necessary adjustments to your CD packaging.
Materials- Make sure the kind of materials you want for your CD packaging are available in the market and are reasonably-priced or else its going to be one tough challenge for everyone. Look for other options just to be safe.
Cost-You have to know how much youre willing to shell out for your CD packaging before getting too creative with the design. Do you have sponsors? Do you already have the materials you need. If youre tight on the deadline, then come up with something thats creative but less time-consuming.
I am sure by now you cant wait to start conceptualizing for your CD packaging. Dont worry, you have nothing to lose but everything to gain. If you only sold 50 out of the 100 special edition CDs you make, then you can just use the rest as promotional material. Anyway, CDs are not your main source of bread and butter.
