Is Getting Into A Good School Catchment Area A Valid Reason For Moving House?

We have all heard of people that have done it

, perhaps you are even considering doing it yourself, but given the costs involved in moving and the other aspects of our lives that need to be taken into consideration, is moving to get into a good school catchment area a valid reason for moving house?

Of course, we all want the very best for our children and their schooling is such as important part of their upbringing. The friends they make at school and the education they receive will play a vital part in forming the person they become. But how far is it reasonable to go to achieve 'the very best'? Where schools are concerned, should we be happy with a 'good'or 'average' school or should we strive to get our child into the school that consistently sits at the very top of the league table? This article looks at things to be aware of if you are considering moving home for the sole purpose of moving into the catchment area of your desired school.

1) It will not go unnoticed that in areas classed as 'good school catchment' areas, house prices are inflated, often significantly. Would you be paying over the odds for a property that, perhaps, would not be appealing to you at all if it were not for its location? Of course, if you move in and later decide to sell the property you should be able to achieve a similar premium in the sale price if the catchment area is still sought after (but can you guarantee that it will be in 5 or 10 years time?).

2) Beware of paying more attention to the school league tables than to the actual particulars of the property you wish to purchase. The whole family have to live there, preferably happily, so you need to take everyone's needs into account. Is there enough space? Is it a safe area for your pets? Are you compromising on the amount of land that comes with the property?

3) Be aware that school catchment areas change. As an area becomes more populated the catchment area tends to shrink - after all, the school has a limit on the number of pupils it can take. You may be feeling organised and have planned the move while your child is still a baby, but will you still be in the catchment area for your desired school in 5 years time? This is a serious consideration.

4) Schools also change. All schools go through periods of change and the school that sits at the top of the league table now may well be nearer to the bottom in 5 years time. Is this a risk you are willing to take?

5) Look at the bigger picture. Yes, your child's schooling is incredibly important but don't forget the needs and requirements of the other members of your family. Are their good commuter links? How far will you be moving from friends and family? Do the other amenities in the area satisfy the family's requirements? Try and be open minded and look at the bigger picture.

Schooling is a vital part of our children's upbringing but a decision to move house purely to get into a desired school catchment area is not a decision that should be taken lightly. Make sure the whole family play a part in making the decision and that you look at the bigger picture and consider everybody's needs.
