Is It Ok To Relight A Cigar After It's Gone Out?

Smoking a cigar is all about spending time enjoying a fine smoke

. However, there will be times when your cigar goes out. Perhaps you did not fully light it, or maybe you had to put it down for some reason. Perhaps you were so engaged in conversation that you forgot about it and it went out. Regardless of why it's out, you are now faced with the prospect of relighting your cigar. Is it ok to do that?

The answer is here "yes and no". First, understand that relighting a cigar is going to introduce a whole range of unwanted flavors. Once tobacco has gone out, you can't relight it and expect it to still taste fresh. That's just an impossibility. When tobacco burns, it releases chemicals of its own that travel through the cigar. As long as its burning, this adds to the experience. However, anyone who has ever tried relighting a cigar will certainly understand the flavor difference involved. Even bystanders can sometimes tell the difference in the smell from a previously lit cigar and a fresh one.

Do not be alarmed by a change in the color of the tobacco. The tobacco that is in the center of a cigar is usually much darker than the tobacco at the end of the cigar when you first light it up. This will not affect how the cigar will smoke so this should not deter you from relighting. Before you relight the cigar, you will need to remove all of the ash from the foot of the cigar. This is the only time that you should forcibly knock or flick the ashes from a cigar. Remove all of the ash up to the point of the fresh tobacco.

Once you have cut the cigar and cleaned up the end, you can use your lighter to relight it. Go through the same steps that you would follow if you were lighting it for the first time. At first, you might notice some off tastes, particularly if you did not cut far enough down the body. However, that should fade as you smoke.

To ensure a great smoke the first time around, make sure that you have a quality cutter and lighter on hand. Trim your cigar evenly and light it making sure that it is burning uniformly. If you need to relight your cigar, do the same and you'll never have to waste a cigar simply because you weren't able to finish it all in one sitting.
