Is Krav Maga The Best Self Defence Method Available

When we talk of self defense, the first thing that comes to mind is boxing and kick fighting

. Moreover, our idea of them is formed mainly from what we see in action channels and movies.

All over the world, the various types of self defense that are learned and used by all are karate, judo, kung fu and some other form of martial arts. Krav Maga is another form of self defense that has its origins in Israel. It is one of the most deadly forms of hand-to-hand combat and they are hence are taught in the army academies in almost all parts of the world and it is also an integral part of commando training. Imi Lichtenfeld first developed it in the 1930s and today it has been modified largely.

Types of Techniques:

It involves a grappling and wrestling like techniques and the attacks and counter attacks involve striking at the key points. There are various techniques and stances involved and those that give this form of fighting its own unique style are bobbing and weaving, and the back and side positions on the ground.

There are various forms of punches as well like straight punch, palm heel strike, throat strike, and vertical and horizontal elbow strikes- and there are seven in total, inside and outside chops and hammer fist and eye strikes. Almost all of these are yellow belt techniques and anyone first initiated to this kind of fighting technique will have to learn them. Only when a student has mastered them will they move on to the next level.

There are various kinds of kicks and blocking techniques as well. The most common of the kicks are groin kick, round kick, axe kick; heel kick, switch kicks, back and uppercut back kick, round house knee strikes etc. All of the head strikes are taught in the green belt level. The blocking techniques are again taught to counteract these kicks and punches and they involve defense mechanisms.

However, Krav Maga now also uses fighting techniques with the gun, knife and especially the stick and the student is taught to inflict deadly injuries on a very dangerous opponent. There are also many ground fighting techniques that are involved in the entire training process.

It is a wrong assumption that a person needs to be extremely well built to train in the martial arts and it is applicable in the case of Krav Maga as well. Internal strength and agility is what is required for training in the martial arts and the speed of the limbs is the advantage that the fighters should aim for.
