Is There A New American Revolution?
More American students are taking a "gap year" between high school and college
. In 2012, according to UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, 1.2% of high school graduates deferred enrollment for a year. College deferment has been slowly growing in popularity since 1980. However, what students do with their gap year varies greatly - from expensive study abroad; to volunteer work; to staying at home to improve resumes, save money or figure out what to study in college. Also, an increasing number of colleges are allowing accepted students to defer enrollment for 1-2 years - which should help parents defer their skepticism.
There has been a decrease in strokes among Americans over age 75. However, the bad news is the average age of stroke victims has fallen from 71 to 69. The worst news is more young and middle-aged Americans are having strokes. That's according to a study based on a 4-county area of Ohio and Kentucky. In 1994, 12.9% of strokes occurred in people ages 20-55. In 2005 it was 18.6%. This is attributed to rising risk factors for stroke - diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol, as well as improved diagnosis. By ignoring those risk factors one can only hope for a "stroke of luck".
Thirty percent of American workers called in sick during the past year when they weren't sick. This was the finding of CareerBuilder's 2012 survey. Twenty-two percent of "healthy" sick days were used for doctors' appointments, 16% were used to catch up on sleep and 34% were used by people who didn't feel like going to work. Unfortunately, some employers might not believe your dog was having a nervous breakdown or you got your toe stuck in a faucet. Twenty-nine percent of employers checked on employees out sick and 17% fired employees for fake excuses. Employers get sick too - of absenteeism.
Twenty percent of Americans have no religious affiliation. According to a 2012 Pew Forum survey, that number has grown 25% in just the past 5 years. Of those 20% percent, 13 million said they were either agnostics or atheists. However, 68% of the religiously unaffiliated believed in God and 37% described themselves as "spiritual, but not religious". The growth among the unaffiliated has been most noticeable in 18- to 29-year-olds, which may be because it's more acceptable today not to belong to a church. In a country with freedom of religion, there's also freedom not to have religion.
