A sedentary lifestyle is a term used to denote a type of lifestyle with a lack of physical activity

. It is characterized by doing a lot of sitting, watching television and computer use or other activities that involve not exerting ones self with little or no vigorous movement for much of the day

It is now widely known that this type of lifestyle leads to obesity and killer diseases and it has now been given a name 'SeDS' short for Sedentary Death Syndrome. It is considered the second largest threat to public health right after the number one threat heart disease.

Even more terrifying is the sad fact children are now developing this disease, with the cause being too much food and too little exercise. Instead of playing outside and taking part in sports children are sitting inside watching a screen of some kind. This to our body is like sleeping and the metabolic rate is lowered in response and the body weakens.

The price for this lack of activity that the human body needs to stay healthy is high. The greatest tragedy is that ailments previously associated with the older population will now affect our children, and will serve to drastically decrease the length and quality of life. Children being born today are predicted to have a 20-30 year lessened life span. This is indeed a sad legacy to leave future generations. We adults should know better.


But how do we know if we are living a lifestyle that is indeed sedentary?

What are the indicators?

That you are almost always seated during the day

That your daily tasks and activities do not involve enough muscle building and maintaining activity.

That you are not moving around at a moderate pace for at least 3 hours each day.

That you have a job which requires no physical activity.

That your leisure time involves watching or interacting with a screen of some kind in a seated position.

Our bodies were designed to be physically active right throughout our life. This used to be known as 'hard work' by our ancestors. The trouble is that hard work, from farming to simply doing household chores without appliances, is no longer part of ordinary life for most people in our modern world.

This means to stay healthy we need to put back this 'hard work' in the form of an intentional exercise program that contains mostly strength training exercise to replace the missing activity. Without it the human body descends into a downward spiral of decay, deterioration and rapid aging until something breaks down completely.


But lets fact it, it is a heck of a lot easier to skip the whole workout thing than it is to live a fit, healthy lifestyle. But you have to be prepared to pay the price. You might never get to know your grandchildren - that's if you ever get to meet them.

Make up your mind that you will not allow inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle to whittle away and erode the health and mobility that you now may enjoy.

You want to keep that for your whole lifespan, so take it upon yourself to get started on a proper exercise program set up and monitored by a fitness professional so you can stay strong and fit throughout your life to protect your future.
