Is Your Inner Critic Sabotaging Your Chances Of Success?

When did you last stop and really consider who you are or what you stand for? If you are like the majority, it was probably a while ago because most people take themselves for granted. Our beliefs are essential to our very being but very few of us think deeply about them. If you wish to begin a personal development course, you should first examine your beliefs. What is a belief? Well, it's a certainty about something. Something we accept without question. Our beliefs directly affect our behavior patterns and character traits. Simply put, a belief will have either a negative or positive effect on us. A belief that leads to constructive actions like goal setting is a positive belief. Negative beliefs usually lead to destructive behaviors - self paranoia being a good example. A major cause of negative beliefs being triggered is what life coaches call the inner critic. Everyone has an inner critic. It is that nagging little voice we hear inside our head that likes to tell us we we'll never amount to much. An occasional comment from your inner critic is fine. It will help stop you proceeding in a 'gung-ho' manner. However, if the inner critic is allowed too much input, it may become a damaging force. A rampant inner critic can destroy instantly the progress you have made. It's not all doom and gloom! We also have that little voice that likes to encourage and praise us; that gives us confidence and hope and is our ticket to success. This is our inner coach. It is a solution seeker not a problem maker. The inner coach inspires you and fills you with determination. Listen to it, it will lead you to success. So, who has your ear most? Inner critic or inner coach? If you want to be an extraordinary person, it needs to be your inner coach. Study extraordinary people. You will see they have a well adjusted inner coach. Developing your inner coach is simply re-tuning your mind so it works for, and not against you. Consider how amazing the human brain actually is. It is estimated that there are more potential connections in your brain than atoms in the universe! All of the world's computers combined are not as powerful. Your brain has almost unlimited potential. Isn't it madness, then, to choose to put it to work against you? Do not allow yourself to be one of the unfulfilled, simply because you did not correctly harness all of that mind power. Why waste time and energy on damaging beliefs. Do not forget - a belief is not necessarily a fact! Is the world flat? No, yet hundreds of years ago people believed that it was. Can you prance around and make it rain? (If you can, you could make a lot of money!!). It is worth taking time then, to look at each of your deep-seated beliefs and examine them. Does the belief help or hinder you? Can your belief be supported by evidence and logic? If not, it is time to ditch it! Our childhood experiences are hugely influential in shaping beliefs. For instance, if your parents told you something was so, you believed them because you trusted them. Throwaway comments like "Don't worry dear, you aren't ... (clever enough, fast enough, etc)" are responsible for a lot of self-image problems that professional therapists spend much time sorting out. Most of these stem from childhood. It is sad to think that our childhood baggage not only never leaves us but becomes enmeshed in the very depths of our being. Thankfully, becoming aware of this enables us to turn any negative effects on our development into positive changes. About the Author:
