How many times have you heard them talk about staying friends after a breakup in movies and on television? Don't you wish there was a proven method to breaking up and staying friends? Would you believe that there is? You can have the best of both worlds if you know there's no hope for a romantic future but want to keep your best friend in your life. You'll just both have to work a little harder to make it happen. Where should you even begin? Start by Being Nice when Breaking Up Breaking up sucks no matter which side of the break up you're on. It may feel as though it's worse for the receiving end but that's a subject for endless hours of debate. The bottom line is that if you're the one doing the dumping nice is the absolute best way to go. No matter how angry, hurt, passive aggressive, or weepy eyed the other person becomes you need to be as nice as is humanly possible if you hope to salvage a friendship from these romantic ashes. Don't Withhold Your Friendship The best way, always, to get a friend is to be a friend. Don't take away your friendship when you eliminate the romantic possibilities. Offer to be there for your ex and mean it. Don't go back on breaking up. You need that distance once you've thrown the gauntlet down and you need to draw a line between the relationship and the friendship. There has to be boundaries. You do want to be a friend first though. It's the only way you're going to receive that coveted friendship in return. Give Your Ex an Honest Answer for Ending Things If you want to leave the door to friendship with your ex open you need to begin with an honest answer for the breakup. No matter what it is knowing the truth will be better than believing a lie. The truth has a nasty habit of showing up when least expected anyway so it's better to get it out now rather than risking a betrayal of friendship and trust further along in your friendship. One final thing to note in this proven method to breaking up and staying friends is that the best way to get anything you want is to ask for it. If you're sincerely interested in staying friends ask your ex to be your friend.
