It Might Be Part Of The Solution For Youth Unemployment?

Youth unemployment remains a significant problem for our community

. The Australian Governments DEEWR website (http://www.deewr.gov.au/lmip/default.aspx?LMIP/LFR/Vic/Melbourne) puts the unemployment rate for October 2012 at 5.3%, and youth unemployment (15 to 24 year olds) at 12.5% and teenage unemployment (15 to 19 year olds) at a staggering 28.7%. There are a range of reasons given by the experts as contributing factors to this problem. These include the reduction in the need for un-skilled labour, the shrinking of traditional employment bases like the manufacturing industry, and a mis-match between industry needs and available human resources. Whatever the cause or causes we need to address it.

On the flip side to youth unemployment, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) believes that there is a skills shortage in ICT and that this skills shortage and falling enrolment rates in ICT courses threatens Australia's $100 billion digital economy.

Course You Can and its parent company ProLearn work in the education and training space and in particular in IT. ProLearn is the preferred training manager for ITCRA (the Australian and New Zealand IT contract and recruitment industry association) and is working with ITCRA to address the training needs of the IT industry.

One of the programs that ProLearn is currently running through Course You Can its consumer arm is a program to get young people into the IT industry. ProLearn is working with Holmesglen TAFE and Computer Power to do this. Holmesglen and Computer Power are offering a jointly badged Diploma of IT. What makes this program unique is that it has over a 90% success rate in its graduates finding employment. The program is also specially designed to get candidates job ready. The campus requires attendees to wear work suitable attire and the course includes not only the Diploma but a number of vendor qualifications from Microsoft and Cisco and others. These vendors qualifications make graduates significantly more employable than those with just a Diploma.

The program also attracts government support for Australian Citizens, which means that applicants only need to find a $250 commitment fee up front, if students enroll this year.

Further, there is no ATAR score required, applicants are asked to sit an aptitude test and that is the only entry requirement, so the program is open to those students who did not get the ATAR score they were hoping for.

With the My Careers Salary Centre, stating that the average wage for someone working in ICT in Australia is over $100,000 (http://content.mycareer.com.au/salary-centre/it-telecommunications/-/australia), it is a genuine opportunity for students to get a start in a well-paid profession and out of the unemployment cycle.
