Its All About Skin - Your Skin and How Science Came to the Rescue

We don't think of the skin as being our largest organ, but it is, it fulfills many functions, and one of its most important is our physical appearance.

Our skin holds us together, and it can look attractive or ugly, depending on how we take care of it. It keeps the heat in and the cold out.

It stops us from overheating in hot weather by perspiring to cool us down. It also protects us from ultra violet rays through Melanocytes cells responsible for melanin production, which gives our skin that tanned look that we all love.

It helps to protect us from harmful infections and injury. It disposes of waste like urea from within the body, through the skin throughout the day.

It manufactures Vitamin D from sunlight.

It is a sensory organ that can feel heat, pressure, pain, touch and pleasure.

If any of these functions should fail the consequences could be very serious.

We have three layers which makes up our skin.

The Epidermis: the outer layer.

The epidermis is the outer most outer layer, and when it is healthy it should look clear and fresh. For the epidermis to stay healthy you will shed dead skin cells so they can be replaced by new ones.

The role of the epidermis is to protect us from invasions and infections, and to also maintain the moisture content of our skin. The epidermis is made up of five layers with each layer having dead cells below, and new cells on the top.

Because our skin is continually growing, new cells are being made by the bottom layer, and because cells die quickly they are pushed upwards by the new cells until they reach the skin's surface, so there is a constant circle of death and renewal happening.

By continually renewing itself each new layer provides another opportunity for healthy skin, and a glowing complexion. Nutrients which come from the blood supply beneath the skin feed the new cells, and the dead cells on the upper levels need water to ensure a smooth, plump complexion.

The epidermis is where the skin's pigment is held which gives the skin its colouring. The thickness ofthe epidermisvaries on different parts of the body, from the tender skin below your eyes to the much tougher skin on the soles of your feet.

The Dermis: the middle layer.

The dermis makes up the middle layer of the skin and lies just beneath the epidermis. This layer needs a rich supply of blood and moisture to keep it healthy, allowing your skin to feel firm, and to look radiant.

The whole of the dermis comprises of living cells and is made up into fibres which are very tough, and makes your skin elastic, firm and strong. Unlike the epidermis, the dermis cannot renew itself when damaged permanently through injury.

The Hypodermis: the inner layer.

The hypodermis is where fatty deposits and collagen are found - they insulate our bodies keeping us warm.

It is also where adipose tissues are found. Adipose tissues are all the connective tissues that form this layer of the skin, and the hypodermis acts like a shock absorber which helps to protect, and reduce injury from impact from the outside.

As you can see our skin does not just hold in all our necessary bits and pieces, it is a very complex piece of equipment, and if we don't take at least reasonable care of it starting in our very early teens, it will show as we grow older.

If we ignorewhat our skin needs itwill begin to age faster than normal, and the last place we want it show is usually the first, and that is on our face.

We can cover up the rest of our skin with smart pretty clothes, and we can go as far as not having any of our skin on display, but our face is always open to the elements, and to the world. So, unless someone can come up with an elegant face glove that will never go out of fashion, it is there up-front for all to admire, or criticize.

In today's society, ageing skin (particularly the face) is considered to be unacceptable. If you look older than your birth years people pass comments like, "she has let herself go", or "she looks a lot older than she is, you would think she would take more care about how she looks." I have said it about someone, and maybe you have said it too. How often are comments like these, passed about men, I wonder?

The inference is always that you can improve the way you look but you just can't be bothered, or you are just too lazy to make the effort.

How Do We Age

The skin ages in three ways: from exposure to direct sunlight, though the natural ageing process and through environmental factors.

It has been estimated that 80% of skin damage occurs because we don't protect our skin enough from exposure to sunlight. Yes, I am sure that more of us are slapping on the sun-screen when we go the beach, or when we know we will be out in the sun for long periods of time. click here

But what about those times when we go outside to empty the rubbish, hang out the laundry, tidy the garden or just chat with a neighbor, have you ever thought about how long you have been in the sun without any protection. It can add up, and any exposure be it only for a few minutes, will damage your skin.

Ageing is something we cannot avoid, but more than ever before, you now have some control in the way you age. There is no secret to getting older you just have to live long enough, and the older we get the faster our bodies begin to show signs of wear and tear.

There are things we can try to avoid, or change, to help slow the process down.

Stress shows on your face making your skin look pale, tired and grey. This can be one of the hardest things to control because none of us knows what life has in store for us, and we all need some stress in our lives, its' what keeps us buzzing, but it is how we handle it, that's what we can control. There is good stress and bad stress and I believe most of us know the difference.

Lack of sleep and late nights: can prematurely age your skin, encouraging lines and wrinkles to appear at an earlier age. Late nights we can control, but being unable to sleep, or a disturbed sleep pattern isn't.

More people than ever are having problems sleeping. They go to bed tired, and once their head hits the pillow any worries they have start to manifest themselves, it could be work, the kids, money I am sure most of us have been there at some time.

Talking your worries over with your family or a friend may help you to find away to resolving your concerns, but if you can't, or its' just not working for you, you may need to seek professional help, but don't let it drag on. We all need our sleep, and though the amount differs from person to person not addressing the problem will make you ill.

A poor diet and lack of exercise: diet plays an important part in how your skin looks, and feels. That's because our skin relies on a variety of minerals and vitamins in order for it to retain its glow and elasticity.

Don't binge on junk food, if youdochances are that you are not getting anywhere near the amount of nutrients you need. Try to incorporate plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables which are packed full of the nutrients you require. Also, eat sensibly which means no faddy diets, or starving yourself to lose weight.

A healthy balanced diet can ensure that your weight is regulated, because gaining a lot of weight then losing it againcan stretch your skin, causing it to sag and wrinkle faster.

Regular exercise:can tone and strengthen your muscles and bones, and helps to get the blood flowing giving your skin a healthy glow. It also helps to strengthen your immune system, and lack of exercise can leave our skin dull and dry which can cause it to wrinkle faster. Drink plenty of water as this will help flush toxins from your body

Smoking: can make your skin age dramatically seen against someone who doesn't smoke, and your skin can become more yellow looking. The act of smoking causes the muscles in the upper lip to pucker, and overtime does cause deep lines in the skin of your upper lip.

Smoking causes premature ageing and facial dryness, and this drying effect helps wrinkles to set in, and as the smoke passes over the face it leaves a nasty residue that can clog the pores and discolour the skin.

Giving up smoking is really hard; I know I've been there. There are various patches and support groups out there, but I found doing it for my-self was the best way. Just do the best you can.

So as you can see it's not all down to the genes we inherited from our parents, grand-parents and so on down the line.

There are things we can do to help not only our skin to stay healthy, but other parts of ourselves as well.
