Premier Show Brings New Art Experience to Victoria

VICTORIA Cutting edge art focused on social change and giving back to the community is the mission of Victoria's new Wolf/Sheep Arthouse set to open its premier exhibit this Friday night at the Atrium.

Wolf/Sheep is a collective of about a dozen local artists, plus designers and various multimedia producers and coordinators with a goal to bring a unique art experience to the people of Victoria. For this reason the collective has merged art production and gallery space into one storefront Wolf/Sheep Arthouse on Government St.

"We really want to demystify contemporary art and make it accessible for everyone," said Erik Van Kobra, Wolf Sheep's creator and a featured artist. "The Wolf/Sheep Arthouse is a place where cutting-edge art is born and sold. We want to really connect people with art, want them to see that it's accessible and can enrich lives, so we produce and sell the pieces in one place, some of our pieces use industrial materials, inspired by fabrication work from our various contributors."

The Friday night show at the Atrium will feature work from several current Wolf/Sheep artists. The pieces draw on contemporary and abstract design and tattoo and street art, utilizing colour, form and energy.

"We want our work to reflect the raw energy and abstract nature of our society," said Van Kobra. "And we also want people to get involved with this work. So when someone comes to the gallery they can actually speak to the artist who created the piece and talk it through. Having the gallery and production space together allows for this kind of connection. It also opens us up to possible collaborations and unique commissioned work."

He adds that Wolf/Sheep values artistic integrity, which means paintings or designs rise solely from a creative urge and are not commercially driven.

The Wolf/Sheep Arthouse Atrium Exhibit will open Friday night and continues through Saturday evening. Original paintings will be reasonably priced and sold through an auction structure. Bids will be broadcast on Twitter so interested buyers can watch the progress of their bid. Artists are donating 20% of the proceeds of each painting sold to local charities.
