It's Time To Go Back To School

With the precarious position of our economy, there are many people pouring back into

college in order to gain the additional skills they need to compete in the current job market. If you have taken time off from your education or just never pursued a degree after high school graduation, there is a good chance you have considered going back, but never took the first step.

Even if you do have some degree of job security, it's time to take the plunge--because you just never know what the future holds. An unexpected death in the family, illness, or the stability of your job field can all land you on your butt, and if you do not have an educated background to take you somewhere else, you may be out of luck.

First off, when you begin making decisions, you need to avoid "crackerjack colleges." These are professional training schools that charge an arm and a leg--sometimes as much as forty thousand a year--for tuition when you could easily receive the same certification at a local community college or four-year university for much less.

These professional schools will boast the convenience of online and night classes, but colleges and universities across the country frequently offer the same advantages for your busy lifestyle. You will be wasting your money, especially since some are only locally accredited, so you could lose the validity of your training if you move.

Make a list of what you want and need in an educational institution. Small class sizes? Teachers that take a personal interest? On-site daycare? A full health center and student insurance? It all depends on your circumstances and what you hope to get out of your education.

Contact an advisor at local colleges and universities to discuss your concerns as a nontraditional student. Ask them about what financial aid might be available to them, and be sure to fill out the FAFSA--the Free Application for Federal Student Aid--as soon as possible.

It may be wise to begin your studies at a local junior college, as this can ease you into the rigors of higher education, especially if you have taken a long break. This is also a good idea if you are unsure about your major and/or your career path. Take advantage of career counseling to help get you on the right path.

This time in your life can be challenging, especially if you are raising a family. But it is not impossible. I have known dozens of nontraditional students who were extremely grateful that they took this step forward.
