Janitorial Cleaning Supplies Go Green

Over the past decade, many schools have taken the initiative to make their grounds a healthier place for the children and the environment

. The idea of going green is not new to any of us, but it was not until recently that entire school systems have started transitioning to green cleaning supplies. Many large corporations have made the switch a long time ago, and it should come as a surprise to us that schools have not considered environmentally friendly cleaning earlier. Schools are four times as densely populated than commercial office buildings, and are subject to constant foot traffic and general messes, leaving our children vulnerable to exposure.

Children have immune systems that are significantly more sensitive than that of adults. Elementary school children are even still in the developmental stages of their immune systems. Using hazardous chemicals throughout the school exposes their delicate immune systems to pollutants that trigger an abundance of bad symptoms including headaches, dizziness, congestion, and worsening asthma. Switching to eco friendly cleaning products does more than limit the amount of exposures; it completely erases the threat.

There are many ways for children to get exposed to dangerous chemicals. In fact, they are in the position to make contact with chemicals on many occasions throughout an average day at school. Keeping in mind that janitorial cleaning supplies are used everyday throughout the school, there is a constant threat of exposure. The most common way for children to be exposed to chemicals is through inhalation. Vapors, fumes, and dust get kicked up all day for the hundred of children to breathe in, allowing chemicals to flow through their bloodstream. Also, skin contact from chemicals can cause rash, irritation, and even burning. Finally, many children ingest the harmful chemicals. Kids often put their hands in their mouths, and rarely wash their hands before eating their lunches. This invites all of the toxic chemicals they have touched or came across to enter their bodies.

Schools are a place for children to safely learn and grow. Using toxic chemicals throughout the schools bring an unnecessary risk to the everyday lives of school children. Thankfully, many school systems are making the change to green cleaning supplies in order to eliminate that risk. In fact, many states are beginning to implement bills with hopes to influence schools to make the change to green cleaning products. Using eco friendly cleaning products not only protects the lives of our children while maintaining a healthy environment, it also teaches the kids a lesson on responsibility while emphasizing the importance of the environment.
