Jaya Bachchan - Prominent Bollywood Actress
Jaya Bachchan was born as Jaya Bhaduri, on 10th April 1948
, at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, in a Bengali Kulin Brahmin family. She completed school from St Joseph Convent School in Bhopal and later studied acting at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
Jaya debuted as a child actor, at the age of 15, in director Satyajit Ray Mahanagar, a Bengali film. Inspired by her experience with Ray, she decided to join Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune to learn acting, and passed out with the gold medal.
She made her first screen role as an adult in Guddi(1971) directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. She played a schoolgirl who is infatuated with the movie star Dharamendra. She was nominated for Filmfare Best Actress Award for this role.
She also featured in Uphaar(1972) opposite Randhir Kapoor, for which she received her second Filmfare nomination. Her 1972 releases included Jawani Diwani(1972), Bawarchi(1972), Parichay(1972)(remake of Sound Of Music), Bansi Birju(1972) and Piya Ka Ghar(1972).
She first acted with her future husband Amitabh Bachchan in Prakash Verma Bansi Birju(1972) followed by Ek Nazar(1972). She was nominated for Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in film Koshish(1972). On 3 June 1973, she married actor Amitabh Bachchan.
The both were rumored hot have an affair from their first film together, Bansi Birju(1972). They were seen in many films together after that. The couple have two children:Shweta Bachchan-Nanda(born 1974) and Abhishek Bachchan(born 1976), who is also an actor.
Jaya Bachchan was elected as a Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament, representing Rajya Sabha, and in February 2010 she stated her intent to complete her term.
It was rumored that Yash Chopra SILSILA(1981) was based on the real life infidelity triangle between Jaya, Amitabh and Rekha. The film portrayed Jaya and Amitabh as a couple with Rekha as the other woman.
On 6th September 2008 at the music release function of her son, Abhishek Bachchan film Drona, Jaya Bachchan made a comment saying that she would speak in Hindi as she is from Uttar Pradesh and that all the people from Maharashtra should please excuse her.
This statement did not go down well with Raj Thackeray, and he promptly called a press conference and demanded that Jaya Bachchan owed an apology to the whole state of Maharashtra and the Marathi people. The matter only cooled down when Amitabh personally apologized to Raj Thackeray.
In 1992, she was honoured with the Padma Shri, India fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India. She is also a recipient of the Yash Bharati Samman, UP state highest award from the Government of Uttar Pradesh. In 2010, Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tongues on Fire film festival in London.
