Job Prospects for Future Psychologists
Jobs prospects for psychologists in all sectors are projected to grow steadily in 2010 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2008, approximately 170,000 psychologists were employed on the workforce. By 2018, this number is expected to grow by almost 20,000. Clinical psychologists, school counselors and researchers are experiencing a steady growth, with nearly 16,800 new jobs projected.
The smaller sector of industrial-organizational psychologists, who work in research and development, human resources, wellness and marketing, is projected to grow by 26 percent. Independent and private psychologists, which make up over 30 percent of the workforce, are projected to have a healthy growth of 14 percent by 2018.
The demand for psychologists in the health services sector is projected to increase by 20-40 percent, and jobs for psychologists in the residential care and nursing sector are projected to increase by 30 percent as more people enter their senior years. Psychologists specializing in the speech therapy and occupational therapy sector are projected to experience 63 percent growth in their industry. This sector may be small comparatively, but its growth is outpacing many other fields.
According to the National Employment Matrix from Bureau of Labor Statistics, very few psychology sectors are expected to decline or flat-line. The minuscule decrease in the substance abuse sector is most likely related to an increase in preventative psychological care for addictions. More and more corporate employers and insurance companies are encouraging employees to join wellness programs, stop drinking and quit smoking. Preventative wellness programs create more jobs for clinical psychologists that help minimize the addictive behavior of compulsive eating, smoking and drinking.
The educational sector employs approximately one-third of the psychologist workforce, including school counselors, psychology professors and top-level researchers. Recently parents have been demanding more mental health services to deal with special education students, bullying, teen depression and a host of other issues in the school system. With the demand for school psychologists and autism specialists on the rise, this large sector is projected to grow more than 10 percent by 2018.
Graduates with a doctoral in psychology are qualified for positions in all sectors of the market. Some positions, however, require additional certification and state licenses. Positions for master's degree graduates are more limited, so competition can be fierce. Graduates with a master's degree can provide school counseling services and work directly under a supervising doctor of psychology.
Argosy University offers a full range of master's and doctoral programs in diverse disciplines of psychology. For more than thirty years, Argosy University has established campuses all over the United States, including Hawaii. Students can complete a master's degree with three to four years of graduate level study.
A doctor's degree in psychology usually takes five to six years to complete or two years more than a master's degree. With a master's degree, students can pursue a clinical professional counselor's license with two years of supervised work. Argosy University also offers online psychology courses anywhere in the country to prepare students for entering the psychology job market.
