Johnny Appleseed Of The Future

The world is full of forested mountains, fields, and tundra. There is a significant amount of deserts in which hardy succulents such as cactus thrive. There certainly are dead zones on the earth as well, but overall we are living on a planet that is teeming with life. Unfortunately for human beings, we are also living on an increasingly hungry planet for us.

The story of Johnny Appleseed imbues us with a great inspiration. For nearly all of our food needs we rely upon traditional agriculture. Unfortunately, that agriculture is growing ever more tenuous as the world's population grows larger and larger. Clearly, we are deep in a food crisis.

Johnny Appleseed was not a traditional agriculturalist, though an agriculturalist he was. He did not hoe, plant, nurture, and harvest, never leaving his orchard. He was more like a migrating bird, scattering seed hither and thither. And by doing so, it is said that he gave the entire continent a bounty of harvestable apple trees. In some corners (well in my corner anyway), this is known as 'scatterculture.'

Humans need food that is rich in calories in order to survive. Nuts provide a lot of calories, but high power food is probably not viable through scatterculture. But humans also need vitamins and minerals, and the plethora of wild plants that can provide these needs seems endless. It would be just as easy to greatly increase yields of edible plants and fruits in their native environments as it is to harvest them. To grow a large harvest of a grain or vegetable upon a field of land where it would not have naturally grown requires a highly intensive labor effort. To increase wild vegetables in a forested area where they grow naturally anyway is as easy as throwing seeds and spores into the breeze. It would be a crime that anyone should go hungry in this world due to lack of inventiveness.
