June In Queens
With Memorial Day being the official kick off to summer
, Queens will really be heating up. June is a great month in terms of things to do in Queens.
One of the biggest events in Queens this June is the Queens Pride. Queens has a large LGBT community that is as diverse as the borough is. The main focus of Queens Pride is the parade which features colorful floats, borough celebrities, and local politicians. The parade route ends in Jackson Heights where the Queens Pride Festival takes place. It features 2 stages with music and dancing, as well as food and drinks. It's fun and family friendly. Queens Pride also consists of smaller events including fundraisers for LGBT causes and nightlife events. This year is sure to be particularly exciting because it is the 20th anniversary of Queens Pride. The upcoming event in Queens also comes on the heels of gay marriage being legalized in New York and being endorsed by President Obama. Queens Pride is a free event.
Sky gazers know that June also marks the Summer Solstice which occurs on June 21st. The best way to ring in the Solstice is by attending the celebration at Socrates Sculpture Park. Going to any park in Queens during the summer is fun, but the Socrates Sculpture Park is particularly awe inspiring because you get the natural beauty and the great works of art. It was built with a massive grant for the arts from the NEA and other organizations. The event includes food, face painting and music. It's very kid-friendly and also includes face painting and games.
Fans of food events should make sure to check out the Taste of Long Island City. The event takes place on June 5th at the Gantry Plaza State Park in LIC. It features food from lots of local restaurants and is a must attend event for foodies. There are different ticket prices that range from $50 -$400 and come with different perks. All profits go to local Queens charities. The event also features borough chefs and politicians.
Lastly those who like horse racing can enjoy the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont Stakes is part of the Triple Crown and is typically the park's biggest draw. Belmont Stakes winners often go on to win the Kentucky Derby so you may just see the winner in action! If the weather is good the atmosphere in the park can be really electrifying and is worth checking out.
