I spend several weeks in Karnataka in 2008, to see how its tourism offer was being developed and if it could rightly be described as the new Kerala'. I can report that it has everything...almost.

Karnataka is a vibrant arena, where drama unfolds in the form of World Heritage Sites, picturesque hill stations, old temple towns, unspoiled beaches, waterfalls and wildlife parks.

It is a secret yet to be told and for a little while you will be able to walk thegolden sands of Om beach, shop in Gokarna markets, take a 'wellness' holiday at SwaSwara, visit Hampi, Mysore Palace, see the mighty monolith at Shravanabelagola,and the wildlife in the incredible Coorg area without being assailed by tourists hordes.

But it is becoming much more popular, particularly with visitors who are attracted by the good accommodation in the Coorg area, the wildlife sanctuaries and of course the truly marvellous heritage sites.

Hampi is one of the most important historic & religious places in India. This was the capital of the Hindu Vijayanagara empire, ruling south India from the 14th to the 16th century. Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread over an area more than 25 square kilometres (10 square miles), Hampi is packed with giant temples, palaces, market streets, aquatic structures, fortifications and many other ancient monuments.

So, is Karnataka the new Kerala. Well yes it could be. The miles of silver sand palm fringed coastline are being developed and a tropical holiday combining heritage, wildlife and beach activities is readily available in Karnataka.
