Keeping An Aed Equipments Onsite At The Workplace

According to reports, about 150 million Americans spend more than half of their waking hours at work

. So don't you think it's wise to keep an AED where you spend the majority of your day. A sudden cardiac arrest can occur anytime without any pronounced symptoms. It occurs due to a condition called as ventricular defibrillation which causes the heart to beat in an erratic manner and this makes the heart pump blood ineffectively and to suddenly stop. The person loses consciousness and experiences breathing problems and unless treated within the first four minutes of this condition occurring, it is very tough to save the person.

The first step is to call for help. After you've called for help, check to see if the victim is breathing. If it's confirmed that the victim isn't breathing, then start cardiopulmonary resuscitation, followed by the most important step which is defibrillation. Defibrillation means treatment of the heart by means of an electric current which regulates the heart beat. An automated external defibrillator is used for this treatment. An AED as it is known as, is a portable, electric device that can diagnose if the heart has stopped beating and deliver a shock if required.

Even though your first step was to call for help, it may take several minutes for first responders to arrive on scene. That said, it's highly recommended that companies keep an automated external defibrillator onsite. Companies can integrate the proper usage on an AED into their yearly emergency training protocols.

Some organizations are already providing a free medical checkup to their employees to check for any symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest. Many organizations like American Heart Association are making sure that AED's are easily accessible to all employees and are providing professional training as well.
