Kettuvallam Houseboats

Kettuvallam is the traditional houseboat which is primarily used in Kerala

, one of the picturesque states of India. Kettuvallam is a local Malyalam word which is the combination of two words -''Kettu'' and '' Vallam''. In Malyalam language Kettu means 'tying' and Vallam means 'country boat'. These splendid houseboats are still made using the ancient techniques of boat building. These are made by the local carpenters by using materials like - Anhili wood, bamboo poles, bamboo mats, carpets, coconut fibre and handmade coir ropes. 'Hull' which is a series of wooden planks, tied together using coir ropes.

These boats are of up to 80 feet in length and width of approx 13 feet in the middle. The boats are covered with thatched roofs over wooden hulls. All the materials used to build these houseboats are completely eco-friendly. Even in some of the houseboats solar system is used to supply electric power.

Kettuvallam, The Water Palace: Earlier houseboats were used as an important means of transport of men, materials like rice and spices and other goods. But these ancient houseboats with modernized interior and facilities, have now become the prime attraction of Kerala. These houseboats are rather the floating Palaces, that provide the fabulous sight of sparkling, peaceful water, green lush palm and coconut trees all around. These water palaces provide a very special and fascinating experience to visitors. The eye soothing views and the antique experience of houseboat is enough to mesmerize any visitor.

These houseboats are available in every size and shapes right from one bedroom houseboat to two, three and even four bedroom houseboat with or without air conditioning. The most popular houseboat accommodation comprises a suite having one or two bedrooms with bath attached, one living room, an open lounge, deck, crew, a kitchen with cook and a guide. The latest innovation made in houseboat is a small conference room.

During the exotic trip of houseboat you can float through villages and can see the local fishermen doing their routine work, also you can see water snakes while hunting fish. The sunset view seems to be really stunning when it sets over the green palm trees and the glittering shore. There are more than 400 Kettuvallams available all over the state. But
