Murphy beds is a term used exclusively in America. In other areas of the world, it may be referred to as a wall, pull down or fold-down structure. Often these devices feature hinges on one side that allow it to be picked up and stored against the wall or behind one or more cabinets. In order for this to properly work, the mattress has to be connected to the frame. Usually this is done with the installment of elastic straps.

Much like trundle versions, these units are preferred by those interested in saving space. Generally, these units do not have box springs. But the mattress may be placed on a wired or wooden platform that keeps the bed from sagging and moving when it is placed up. These units are considered a mechanical model of the European press bed and are similar to folding beds that have been long used by travelers and settlers. Many inventions from the 19th century led up to the development of this model.

Modern versions may feature extras, such as cabinets for storing goods, office components and lighting units. Piston-lift and torsion springs are used in many of these models to help with the lowering and raising of the devices. Handles may be added as well.

The cost for these will depend largely on the worker that is hired, extra features and other design elements, and the space for installment. There are some retailers that sell kits including all of the necessary items to construct and install these beds. Such products are targeted at homeowners themselves.
