Key Household Areas For Home Improvement
Perhaps you've bought a property and want to rent it out to a family
, or maybe it's been a while since you checked on the condition of the home. Guess what? It's home improvement time! There's always something needing done, and some things are more important than others. Take a look at these points and think about if there's room for work in your property!
If your home originates in the late thirties or early forties, it's very possible the wiring is an old style, known as "knob and tube". This was very common then, but the wiring systems used in homes has been updated a couple of times since then. The wiring is approved by code if the house predates newer wiring schemes, but if you're doing a massive retrofit, it wouldn't hurt to replace the wiring.
You'll know if you have knob and tube wiring if the circuit breakers are the old screw in type instead of switches, or if home wiring is covered with a cotton looking fabric. Again, this is not always a problem, but can be potentially.
Plumbing is another thing you should look at closely. When was the last time the house was re-piped? This can be a ticking time bomb for many homeowners. If you have low water pressure or rusty colored water, it's probably time to replace old leaky pipes with all copper piping. The benefit to doing something like this now is that there's all kinds of government incentives and tax deductions for saving water and energy, and this is a great way to do it.
When re-piping, many people go for a tank-less water heater. Smaller, cheaper to run, and if they break you don't have a potential flood on your hands, these water heaters heat the water as you use it instead of keeping one big boiler hot.
Visually you can improve your home with some simple steps. One is to repaint the outside. This is something you can do yourself and will brighten up the home to no end. Choose a color that fits in well with your surroundings, and consider a gaudy pink might annoy your neighbors. Muted tones are usually best and you can save the color for the landscaping. Power wash the outside of the house first to clean off dirt and go to it with some paint and a good sturdy ladder. This task is probably best handles in the summer when the paint can dry quickly.
Crown molding and baseboard can really give the inside of a home a real face lift. Made of very affordable MDF, you can pick this up at your local hardware store in varying styles. Once you've got it up, set a bead of caulk over it to make it absolutely flush with the walls then paint it to make it looks super clean and hide any nails or screws.
Paint the interior of your house as well to get a nice fresh clean look everywhere. You'll be amazed at the difference of this home improvement project. Painting different rooms in different colors will really make your home come alive.
