Talking to oneself can be the key to the success to learn a new language

. How's that. I'll share my story. I started talking to myself, started that habit at the first year of university, when I decided to study English as a second language. I had no friends, talking to no body and English was a catastrophe to me to study. At our universities, especially Arab countries, most of English students have a very good background of it, getting into the faculty of art to master the language or to study its literature and history. I have to admit I started at zero level. I was trying my best not to show people how weak I am at this language and I was hardly trying not to show other students how frustrated I am; getting into the class listening to students and professors speaking and discussing whatsoever the subject is about! It's all vague to me! And that was scary. I seriously thought of change the subject into anything but English language. Well I was about to do it till I found that I can't do it due to financial problems. All what it came to my mind is that I have to understand at least what others are talking about. I started listening to music, looking up the new vocabs, repeating them so I can at least have punch of words to make a sentence, a meaningful one. Other way to have more vocabs was by suggesting a topic to write about and collecting all the related terms. Ok, that was fine and now I can make sentences but full of grammar mistakes. At first, it didn't sound bad to me. I was just able to speak. When I reached that level I started to think of grammar. I can't send the correct message with all the grammatical mistakes I have, so I concentrated on that part. Yes, I suck at grammar but at least I can express myself. However, I just needed to talk and I had to know how to talk. Since I had no one to talk to, it just came to my mind. At the beginning I was holding my mobile pretending to talk to someone in English language. And it worked. I became an addict to this kind of conversations and it improved my language a lot; whenever I came across a new word in my mother tongue language I just turn to the dictionary. Dictionary is a different world, you think you are looking for one word and you come across different words you've been looking for.

Owing to the fact that mobile's radiations really affect our health, I decided to talk to myself. I was walking in the university and talking to myself. And it felt so great. Although students called me freak and lot of names, I just didn't care and I enjoyed a lot. The real improvement happened when I was surfing the net and found one of the educational sites. It's one of the best sites I've ever learnt from. This was only the gate. On top of that, the real reason of my success lied in a message sent by a lovely person, American native speaker, who offered me a "spoken" chat. Oh God, I still remember how shy I was. I felt scared and couldn't speak. I was shaking afraid of using the wrong word or even not knowing the term to be used, and the worse was not to understand his statements. Step by step, we broke the ice and I got the courage to speak. Though I still till the moment have my heart beat so fast when speaking to any native speaker, I cannot stop that. It's in my blood and feels so good.

By the way, whoever speaks to me now thinks that I am American. I am really proud of it. Just looking for being a native speaker-like and I am certainly going for it.
