Khajuraho is known for its erotic temples

Khajuraho is known for its erotic temples. There were around 85 temples but now only 22 have survived with the ravages of time. These exquisite religious spots enthrall tourists to come here from far and wide. Though the sculptures carved on them depict the most taboo subject sex yet the images have got appreciation from tourists who throng here from all across the world.

Some famous attractions of Khajuraho include:

Western Group of Temples

The sculptures of these beautiful temples are very popular among visitors. Dedicated to Hindu deities of Lord Shiva and Vishnu, they are located at the left of the entrance to Khajuraho. Kandariya Mahadeo are famous for some of the finest figurines depicted on their walls. It has earned acclamations because of the ruins of Chausath Yogini temple. Matangeswara Temple is the only place where people still worship.

Eastern Group of Temples

The temple of Parsvanath is the biggest and finest of the Jain temples here. Originally, it was dedicated to Adinath but later to Parshvanath. It is the best example of the sensitive art without any sexual concept. You can see the temple of Adinath, situated near this temple with fine carvings. It is similar to other Hindu temples of Khajuraho.

The Southern Group

You can find only two temples in the Southern group of temples. The Duladeo temple, which has wooden structures. They lessen its authenticity to some extent. Another one is of Chaturbhuja, situated far from the village. It boasts of a 3 m high statue of Vishnu.

Besides these religious places, there is another popular attraction namely the Archeological Museum. It offers a very good collection of inscriptions, sculpture and architectural objects. Panna National Park is another famous tourist attraction located nearby the place.

Khajuraho Dance Festival

It is one such festival of India that all dance lovers eagerly look for. The seven days festival showcases the richness of the classical dance of India. This festival enjoys performance by some of the best classical dancers in India every year. They perform against the astonishing backdrop of the magnificently lit temples. The different dances performed here are Kathak, Bharat Natyam and Odissi.

How to Reach?

One can reach here from all major parts of the country by rail, road and air. From Delhi, it is located about 600 kilometers away. Jhansi is the nearest airport where many airlines fly. Train is the main mode of transport connecting it to the remotest corners of India.
