Kidney Problems From Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition wherein the body is unable to manage the blood glucose levels internally

. As a result, the blood has a thicker viscosity and sugar crystals free float and this is a problem to the fine blood vessels to many organs in the body.

When an individual has diabetes, there are two issues that occur. The lack of insulin makes cells unable to metabolize glucose in the bloodstream for their cellular needs. The blood sugar is used as fuel for operations and regeneration. Without fuel, cells are unable to properly function, leading to organ failure and other issues. In another front, the sugar crystals damage the fine blood vessels, leading to lack of oxygenated blood from reaching cells, again leading to cellular damage and death.

This issue is very much a problem when it comes to a diabetic's kidneys. When the diabetes is left unmanaged, it causes damage to the fine blood vessels of the organ as well as cellular death in the kidney. This is the complication called nephropathy where the body's kidneys improperly function as a result of the havoc wreaked by diabetes.

Since this metabolic condition does not have any outward manifestations, the complications on the kidney also does not make itself known unless the damage is quite pervasive. These include increased fatigue, nausea and vomiting, itchy and scaly skin, metal after taste in the mouth, increased heartburn instances and swelling in the extremities because of fluid build-up. Over time, the body is unable to properly clean its fluid system, leading to increased health issues.

This is a major issue as the kidney is the body's filtration system to eliminate waste products due to metabolic processes. The kidneys also help control blood pressure and fluid balance in the individual. The kidney also produces hormones that help the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. When this body organ fails, the waste builds up in the body, leading to infection and even sepsis. When the bone marrow does not receive the hormone, then blood cells are not produced leading to blood issues in the long run.

In order to prevent this complication from diabetes, it would be best to have a kidney check up every so often, especially when one is managing this metabolic condition. What doctors would need is the first urine in the morning to determine if albumin is present in the pee sample. Depending on the type of albumin and its volume in the urine would determine the gravity of kidney disease one needs to worry about as a complication from diabetes.
