Kitesurfing Equipment To Keep You On The Waves

Kitesurfing, it's one of the fastest growing extreme sports across the globe

, and for good reason. Getting you out onto the beach, into the sea, getting a real physical body workout and harnessing the power of the wind is a heady combination of elements. There's a fair bit of Kitesurfing equipment you will need to get your head around before you can start pulling big hang times.

As a priority for consideration, a helmet or head protector should be top of the kit list. You need to be aware of the variable characteristics of the wind and the sea, and respect the fact that there is a drowning risk. In addition, and the reason for head wear, is the surface of the ocean can be as hard as steel if you lose control of the kite in mid air and fall from some distance, risks include concussion and broken bones.

Right, on to the kite. You'll need to be proficient in flying skills, so if you have never flown large power kites or traction kites before on land consider working up slowly to kiteboarding to make sure you can handle the power, and importantly, handle the prevailing weather conditions.

It's worth investigating have a few instructional sessions with a qualified kitesurfing teacher if you can't wait to get started.

There are big differences too between kites designed for use on land and kites designed for use on the water. For starters, land power kites (traction kites) tend to be a ram air design, filling with air like a parachute when in the wind power window.

They aren't really suitable for sea usage as they can fill with water and become impossible to fly. LEI or Leading Edge Inflatable kites are the ideal design for water use as they float on the surface and can be easily relaunched, the wing design allows is more conducive to upwind manouvering.

The 4 line control system used on land kites is enhanced for LEI's too. One a four line kite, the lines are fixed two at the front edge and two at the back edge onto curving handles, at the top and bottom respectively, allowing braking by moving the handles back, tightening the brake lines and alter the wing angle to stop it filling with air. Water kites tend to have 5 lines allowing their power to be altered mid fly.

Depowerable kites connect the power lines to either end of a rigid control bar, and then join the brake lines in the centre via an adjustable system that goes through the centre of the bar and connects directly to a harness that the flyer wears. This allows the user to quickly adjust the angle of the wing to add or decrease power. The harness connections usually have a quick release safety pull too in case of emergencies.

Naturally you'll need a board of some kind as well to kitesurf. There are a couple of basic styles, all with lots of variation in shape and style from manufacturer to manufacturer. One basic style is a single direction board, similar to a windsurfing board; the other style is more like a wakeboard and is known as a twin tip. This is the more prevalent type of board on the waves currently. Whatever kitesurfing equipment you choose, get out there and enjoy it!
