Knowing Different Digital Processors
DSPs are designed specifically to perform large numbers of complex arithmetic calculations as quickly as possible
. This is usually used for applications such as image processing, speech recognition, and telecommunications.
They are more efficient than general-purpose microprocessors at performing basic arithmetic operations, especially multiplication. They are found in devices that require rapid processing of audio or video data in real time, such as cell phones, DVD players, and digital cameras.
Microprocessors are general-purpose computational devices. They are designed to run software applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, and web browsers.
These are applications where speed is important but not critical. Microprocessors are at the core of desktops, laptops, netbooks, and tablet PCs.
Increasing microprocessor clock speeds have enabled engineers to incorporate them in applications that once required a DSP. The trend toward multi-core processors enables general-purpose CPUs and DSPs to be incorporated into a single chip.
The central processing unit (CPU) is a chip that functions as the brains of the computer. It is made of millions of transistors.
Microprocessors are the circuitry that surrounds the CPU. It is more than the CPU because it contains other processors, like the graphics processor unit.
Sound cards and network cards are also encased in microprocessors. The CPU has a control unit, logic and arithmetic unit and registers, plus a small bit of memory called cache.
The logic unit processes instructions one cycle at a time. It performs these instructions based on the computer program that it is running.
The CPU performs individual instructions, and when combined to perform a task, this is a computer program. If the computer program will seek out a mathematical computation, the logic unit sends that instruction to the arithmetic unit to perform the task.
Upon completion of the operation, the results get placed into CPU cache or back into the logic unit for further operations. The control unit controls how and in what order the instructions will be processed.
The vector processor is a CPU that operates on an instruction set containing one-dimensional arrays of data called vectors. This is in contrast to a scalar processor whose instructions operate on single data items.
Many electronic technicians, engineers and students find an oscilloscope an indispensable tool. They can use this piece of test equipment to see the shapes and timing relationships in addition to the voltage of electronic signals.
This information may provide the information necessary to determine success and failure in electronic circuit analysis. The Digital Sampling Oscilloscope (DSO) and Digital Signal Processing Oscilloscope (DSPO) display and analyze electronic signals.
A DSO comes as a ready to use, self-contained unit. The digital oscilloscope requires a simple setup similar to the analog predecessors.
You can complete a simple hook up of the probes to the circuit under test to make your measurements. A DSPO connects to a computer, most often as an extension card, rather than as an independent unit.
For identical functionality, the DSPO will provide more value for the money if the computer is compatible with the hardware. A DSO measures the voltage and frequency of any wave form.
It shows every vibration and shape of a particular frequency. The DSO provides a graphic representation of the shape.
If the DSO allows for multiple channels, you can compare multiple frequencies or compare a stored frequency from the lab to one in the field. A DSO functions are limited to the technology at the time of manufacture.
Since the DSPO is computer hardware, it provides the same functionality as the DSO, but with more flexibility and updating options. If you need more power or accessing ability, you can add more RAM to your computer.
Manufacturers may offer upgrades and updates for a DSO, depending on the model. Some may offer free or low cost updates for a limited period of time following your purchase.
Since a DSPO is part of a computer, it is easy to update. Manufacturers of DSPO scopes understand this expectation and often offer frequent updates and new information based on the experience and market use.
