LDS Emergency Preparedness - Importance
With the economy failing around us and the job market scarce
, one can only wonder and see the reason behind the prophet's counsel on emergency preparedness. What exactly are we preparing for, and what do we need? I have a water bottle and a blanket in the back of my car, and with a smile on my face I know that it is not enough. The two things generally included in what you should have to be prepared' are a 72 hour kit and food storage.
When questioning what goes into a 72 hour kit, just think about all the essentials needed to get you through 3 days when you have nothing. Keep in mind that mascara or Nintendo DS are not considered essentials when trying to survive, though you may feel they are. Just as you always seem to hit red lights when you are late to work, the weather could be at its worst during a crisis or disaster so make sure the kit is prepared for any type of weather. Detailed lists of good items to put into a 72 hour kit are available online, and most communities have a booklet or pamphlet available as well.
Leaders in the LDS church have asked members to have a year's worth of food storage. However much you decide to get, it is important to remember that food goes bad and that you should be using what you have stored and replacing it regularly. Also, although things like rice and wheat are great for food storage, just as you may get sick of eating that every day right now, your appetite will not change with disaster. Make sure you have things you like to eat included, and have them balance out the more bland things in your food storage. You shouldn't have a problem finding out which of your favorite foods keep well with resources like the Internet, or the food storage specialist in your ward. When your food storage is needed in a disaster, vitamins and other things needed for a balanced diet are crucial to keeping you healthy and making it bearable.
These are just a few suggestions for those who are beginning their emergency preparedness adventure, or are looking for ways to enhance what they already have. Of course, for more details and guidance, lds.org and the community pamphlets have excellent information no matter how far along you are on your 72 hour kit and food storage. Another important part of emergency preparedness is having a plan. Having the necessary items are useless if you don't know how to get to them in an emergency, or lose the people who they are for during a disaster. A plan that includes all family members with detailed instructions for what to do during different types of disasters and emergencies is vital.
With the state of our economy and the likelihood of unforeseen disasters in the future, the importance of emergency preparedness becomes more real every day. Those who are prepared will undoubtedly reap the benefit of it.
