The map pin was invented by Edwin Moore around 1900 after he founded the Moore Push-Pin Company These pins have a plastic head or handle or spherical head for easy removal. Map pins are safer than flat-head thumbtacks when dropped or discarded because they fall flat on surfaces, rather than point straight up, as can easily happen with simple metal thumbtacks. Map pins are small push pins that have either flat or round heads and they are often used as indicators on a map. The types of map pins are as follows:-

Small map pins.

Medium map pins

Large map pins.

Map pins with extra large size.

Medium pins with dots, crosses or stripes on the pin head.

Very large markable map pin.

Pennant and flag map pins.

Large and colored push pins.

Numbered map pins (comes in two sizes, numbered from 1-100 (small) and 1-500 (large).

To write on map pins use pencil or dry erase marker. Use permanent marker or pen to write on the flat head of map pin. If you use pencil, then you can erase the mark later and reuse the paper insert. Map pins with round heads cannot be written directly but a small piece of paper can be folded over the pin and glued to it to create a flag. A flag can also be created by inserting the pin through the top and bottom of the left side of a small piece of paper and then you can write on this flag to label the pin.

Map pins, also known as map tacks and map flags are used to identify places on a map andthey usually help in marking down your travels, observing business locations, plot customer locations and many others. Round-head map pins and numbered map pins are available in different colors and sizes and they are very easy to be found on stationery shops but usually one can get these map pins only in 100 or 200 series.

With the help of map pin one can keep tracks of all the cities in home state that you and your family visited. After visiting a new city one can simply place a pin on the city or town on map. Track the map to a bulletin board using push pins and divide the push pins into colored piles. You can use green push pins for the cities you have visited. Use another color such as blue or orange for the cities that you hope to visit one day. When you visit a blue or orange city, change the push pin to green.

Hang the bulletin board on your wall with the help of the nail or prop it up against a wall on the desk. Store the push pins in a two separate containers like small bowls or pencil holders and one container should be reserved for green push pins and the other for blue.
