LTO Tape New Generation
Linear Tape-Open (or LTO) is a magnetic tape data storage technology originally developed in the late 1990s as an open standards alternative to the proprietary magnetic tape formats that were available at the time. Seagate, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM initiated the LTO Consortium, which directs development and manages licensing and certification of media and mechanism manufacturers. The standard form-factor of LTO technology goes by the name Ultrium, the original version of which was released in 2000 and could hold 100 GB of data in a single cartridge. The most recent version was released in 2010 and can hold 1.5 TB in the same size cartridge. Since 2002, LTO has been the best selling "super tape" format and is widely used with small and large computer systems, especially for backup.
LTO-1
LTO-1 was released on 2000 and can store 100 GB. LTO-1 data tapes can be used with second generation Dell tape drives. It provides more flexibility and benefits to its customers.
LTO-2
LTO2 was released on 2003 and can store 200 GB. The throughput performance of the LTO 2 tape format ranges from 30MB/s to 35MB/s approximately, double from that of LTO-1 tape format. Media formulation of the LTO2 tape cartridges is different from that of LTO-1 ultrium tape cartridges but the dimensions are the same.
LTO-3
LTO-3 HH was released on 2005, storing 400 GB. Quantum LTO-3 HH tape drive is an internal half height (HH) drive. Model number of this high speed LTO-3 drive is TC-L32AX-BR and it is in black color.
LTO-4
LTO-4 was released on 2007, storing 800 GB. LTO-4 HH is a high quality tape drive manufactured by Quantum. Quantum LTO4 HH tape drives feature up to 1600 GB compressed capacity. Quantum LTO-4 tape drives offer excellent storage in demanding work environments. In compressed mode, the recording performance of these LTO 4 drives reaches 864 GB/hour.
LTO-5
LTO-5 has been released this year, storing 1500 GB. 2010 is a year of new challenges to the storage industry: from new legislations and regulatory requirements for stored data required to be lasting, affordable and reliable solutions; to large file data exchange needs where solutions must be easy to use, durable, have an open standard and set up for long term solution.
The specifications support tape cartridge storage capacity of 3 TB (terabytes), a near doubling of capacity over the previous generation, and tape drive data transfer rates of up to 280 MB/s (megabytes-per-second). The LTO Ultrium format generation 5 also includes new partitioning functionality, enabling capabilities that can enhance file control and space management, addressing the growing needs of marketplace segments, such as rich media.
High speed LTO-5 is the only backup tape cartridge that features new partitioning functionality. Partitioning mechanism has been introduced to address the ever increasing requirements of the market segment. LTO-5 tape's partitioning functionality assists in space management and file control. Therefore this allows faster searching. High capacity LTO-5 data tape delivers exceptional media reliability under harsh working conditions. LTO-5is the second generation of LTO format that offers hardware based encryption functionality. Therefore this feature makes it the ideal tape storage technology for transportation and backup of sensitive data.
