Language Schools: Not Just For Youngsters
If you think about learning a new language or going to school
, there is an immediate association made with youngsters. Academic learning of any sort is usually thought of as the domain of younger generations. However, more and more so, that is not the case. Many people now have the freedom and means to live unconventionally and at their own pace. It is becoming increasingly fashionable to go back to school after retirement. In the early eighties, a mere 3.5% those attending schools and universities were mature students. This number had increased to a healthier 10% by 2005, and, over the past five years, the ratio has strengthened considerably. Despite this, many counsellors say that there is a general reluctance among those categorised as 'mature students' to return to school.
This trend, however, is not seen in language schools. There are many retired professionals studying a new language in their country or travelling round the world learning about new cultures. The accessible and practical nature of language courses make them a great attraction for those 'young at heart'. Some institutes offer specific courses designed for those in the older age categories to study with others in similar situations. Other language schools believe in intergrating students of all age groups. They claim that senior citizens returning to school prefer not to be put into separate classes. Studying in classes comprising different age groups keeps their spirits high and also seems to be beneficial to their learning.
Learning a language post-retirement offers a great deal of benefits. It keeps the mind young, alert and in 'learning mode'. After retirement, many couples make extended plans to travel to places around the world. Some make an effort to make their travels more enjoyable by learning the basics of the various local languages. For instance, while travelling through Latin America, knowledge of Spanish is highly desired. Spanish language courses help foreigners adjust easily to the local dialects of Spanish-speaking countries. In fact, language schools bear in mind students' requirements while designing their courses. Emphasis is usually placed on learning practical aspects of the language rather than more theoretical aspects.
For many people wanting to learn English at an English language school London is a very popular destination. Learning other languages is also becoming very popular among the elderly and, for those that do not wish to travel, there are options at home. For example, for German classes London also offers a wide selection of language institutes with native teachers. After all, it is never too old to learn.
