Your dissertation is due tomorrow
Your dissertation is due tomorrow. It must be finished tonight. Its only 11:00 PM, but your eyes are closing and your head in nodding. How are you going to stay awake? Drugs and caffeine are out, because you have to be at your best tomorrow. What is a natural way to stay awake?
Get moving
One study done at California State University found that a brisk 10 minute walk was more effective at increasing alertness than eating a candy bar. Exercise increases your heart rate, pumping more oxygen to your brain. The effects can last for up to 2 hours. So run up and down the stairs for 10 minutes. Plug in an exercise video, or just march in place. The key is to get your blood circulating.
Eat Some Protein
A high carbohydrate snack might give you a quick boost, but an hour later the crash will come. Go for some protein, such as yogurt or a hard boiled egg. Just avoid turkey. It contains tryptophan, a natural sedative.
Deep Breathing
Try some deep breathing. This is another way to get oxygen to your brain. Sit up straight, and place on hand on your abdomen. Inhale slowly, trying to make your belly expand. Exhale slowly. Repeat 10 times.
Upbeat Music
If it doesnt distract you too much, try some upbeat music. Singing along to the music will also help you stay awake.
Up the lights
A dim room is conducive to falling asleep. So lighten up. A full spectrum light that imitates the sun is ideal, but failing that, try to make it as bright as possible. More light tricks your body into thinking its day time, and day time is when humans are naturally awake.
Wet it down
Drink a glass of water. Dehydration can lead to tiredness. Splash some cold water on your face, and run cold water over your wrists. If all else fails, take a cold shower. You will wake up.
Lower the temperature
Turn down your thermostat, or open a window. Warm still air will make you drowsy. You dont want it so cold that you are shivering, but a cooler room will naturally make you more alert.
It is possible to stay awake without drugs or caffeine, using safe natural methods. Using natural methods also allows you to go to sleep when you're done. Try it and see.
