Lead Testing In Sydney, A Pb Of Safety

Lead metal poses health risks to building occupants

, trade personnel and lead process employees and can be found in older commercial, industrial and residential buildings in the form of lead paint or lead based paint, coating products or in workplaces where lead processes are involved as lead dust and/or lead fumes making lead testing very important.

Over the past couple of years, many organizations have been fighting to tighten the rules surrounding lead testing requirements as well as the procedures contractors must follow to avoid spreading lead-tainted dust during renovation and construction projects. The rules are also useful as guidelines for home renovators, particularly if you're doing it yourself in a home that is likely to have lead paint on the walls - remember lead based paint can be buried under layers of wallpaper and more recent paint. The use of plastic sheeting to avoid spreading dust outside the work area, spraying water mist to tamp down dust and thoroughly cleaning work areas each day, are some of the things that can be done to reduce lead based dust that is floating in the air due to construction or renovations. Some of the ways that you can be exposed to lead dust are inhalation as breathing lead dust or lead fumes, fine particles of lead can penetrate deeply into the lungs and thus into the blood stream. You can also ingest lead by eating contaminated food or drink, or by not washing your hands before meals in workplaces where lead dust is present. People who smoke can actually take in lead dust on their hands or cigarettes. Absorption through the skin or mucous membranes can occur where lead based fine particles, leaded petrol, or lubricants handled without gloves or cream that act as a barrier.

Based on the lead test results, a risk assessment can then be undertaken to evaluate the potential exposure to lead through all three routes of exposure which may involve health surveillance (lead testing of the blood) to determine if the work is a lead-risk, where specific requirements become mandatory to comply with the occupational health and safety legislation. Identification of lead exposure hazard involves inspecting the workplace by an occupational hygienist, sampling and lead testing on surfaces, in materials, and in air. Lead poisoning affects virtually every system in the body including the central and peripheral nervous systems, kidneys and blood. Lead accumulates in a persons body throughout his or her lifetime and is stored mostly in the bones. Mandatory lead testing is in place to protect workers from these very serious health effects.
